Greetings Mason UMC friends!

Welcome to this week's edition of the Mason UMC Weekly E-News. The Once & Again Kids Sale was a big success! Thank you to all who volunteered, donated and took part. The church was bustling all week. This event is near and dear to the hearts of so many with it's long standing tradition.

This week, I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Gary Standafer about a ReNews project at the Little Miami Scenic Trails. As the leaves began to fall from the canopy of trees above us, he spoke of planting tree saplings along the trail, the rich history behind the scenic pathway and how this project has helped to give him purpose by serving. You will see more to come in an upcoming service about this across the street adventure. Mason is certainly buzzing with renewing the face of the earth and reaching out in our community.

Please join us this Sunday and bring back your money accumulated from the Power of One Dollar Bill venture. We are excited to hear your ideas and how your one dollar made a difference.

All my best....Kami

GriefShare

New GriefShare Session Beginning

Tuesday, October 21st, 2014

A new GriefShare session at Mason United Methodist Church will begin on Tuesday, October 21st, 2014. The session will run consecutively for thirteen weeks on Tuesday evenings. We will meet in the church library from 6:30-8:30 pm. This is an open group for adults, so you can join the group at any time.

GriefShare is a special seminar and support group for people grieving the loss of a loved one. This group is facilitated by people who have experienced grief and understand what you are experiencing. They want to offer you comfort and encouragement during this difficult time.

Each GriefShare session includes a video seminar and group discussion. A GriefShare workbook assists you with note-taking, weekly journaling, and grief study.  The videos feature top experts on grief recovery, reenactments about living with grief, and real-life stories of people who have experienced loss of loved ones. During the small group discussion time, you'll have the opportunity to interact with others who have experienced a recent loss, learn about their experiences, and share your own, as you feel comfortable.

GriefShare is a non-denominational group and features biblical teaching on grief and recovery topics. It is a national program that is offered in many area of the US. To watch a video to learn more about GriefShare, click here

If you would like further information, please feel free to contact Melisa Smith-Latapy at 513-256-5812. Participants are encouraged to pre-register by contacting the Mason UMC church office at 513-398-4741 or by filling out a registration form at the front desk. If you know of others who may also be interested, please take a brochure from the front desk and pass it on to those that may find comfort in GriefShare.

Sue's Socks

COLLECTING MEN'S AND WOMEN'S WHITE ADULT SOCKS for the Medical Volunteers of Cincinnati Foot Care Clinics Foot Care Clinics provide free foot care to homeless and needy throughout Cincinnati. Over 500 clients have been served each year. Clients receive a new pair of socks and shoes after their treatment. The Foot Clinics begin operation in October. We would like to provide them with WHITE sock donations in honor and memory of Sue Jorgensen who volunteered at the Clinics. We are collecting socks not only in the church Narthex, but with the help of Sue's grandson, we will be collecting at a couple of Papa John's locations.

THANK YOU

THANK YOU MUMC CONGREGATION!!

MUMC's recent FAITH Emergency Services funding went to help 30 needy students buy clothes for the new school year.  This is a HUGE deal for the families and kids...they are very thankful.

We are under the commandment (and joy) of loving our neighbor!

Our neighbors:

-  10% of Mason/Deerfield Township residents have incomes of less than $25,000 a year

-  Some families live paycheck to paycheck

-  Some just have temporary set-backs (lost job, disability, medical costs) leaving them without rent, utility, or food money

Every week FAITH Emergency Services sees these families and funds go to helping with

-  Rent evictions

-  Utility Shut-off

-  Student clothing

-  Foodcards

-  Prescription assistance

Over 1,000 of our neighbors are helped every year!

Upward Basketball

What is Upward? Upward is a fantastic outreach opportunity that teaches kids about God while having fun and playing basketball and cheerleading. We have partnered with 9 other local churches in Northern Cincinnati Upward Sports. Over 1,300 children from Mason and West Chester participated in this program last year and we are the only church in the group located in Mason.

What does Mason UMC have to do? We will host 4 Basketball Teams and a Cheerleading Squad, giving them a place to practice once a week and a place to play their games on Saturday mornings. This give us an opportunity to serve the community, help teach children (and their families) about God (some of whom have never been to a church) and it gives us a wonderful opportunity to showcase our church to the community. Last season we had over 2,200 people visited our church on game days and more people visited us on practice nights as well.

How does it work? Given the size of our basketball court (games will be in the Multi Ministry Room), we will be hosting Teams (boys and/or girls) in Kindergarten. We will also be hosting a cheerleading squad this year. Each Team meets once a week on a weeknight for practice. Practices begin 12/01/14 and the season is 1/10/15 - 2/28/15. Games are played on Saturday mornings. The season is wrapped up with an Awards Night that is truly a fantastic, fun filled event for the kids!

What help do we need? We need volunteers. You can help with as little or as much as you'd like. Everyone is welcome and needed - more hands make for less work - men, women, young and old. The season is only 8 weeks long and games are only once a week. You can pick game days to work around your schedule. We need coaches, referees, greeters, concession workers, computer/audio workers and announcers.

NO EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED AND TRAINING IS PROVIDED. This is a great way to serve and to have a lot of fun at the same time! For more information, please contact Chris Foss at [email protected] or by calling 513-234-6115.

GPS Zone

GPS Zone

is where children and teens find programs, relationships, and experiences to help them navigate their spiritual journeys to live God's mission to renew the face of the earth!

GPS Zone is more than a new name and logo! It embraces a ministry that equips families with children from birth to age 18 to love God and neighbor. Ellen Foss and Patty Van Zandt, directors of children and youth ministry respectively, are collaborating to ensure the gift of faith is passed on seamlessly to the next generation!

GPS Zone is an affirmation that families and children matter. Parents are THE primary spiritual leaders of children and yes, of teens, too! Sunday School teachers, adult mentors, and ministry workers are an extension of the Christian education that begins in the home. We are excited to be in partnership together!

GPS Zone is an umbrella term for all ministry that happens with children and teens! You will see a "Splash" with the word kidz or teen if a particular age group is referenced. Notice the new bulletin board outside room 8 for current happenings!

Waypoint refers to the Christian education experience offered at 11 am on Sundays. There is Waypoint for Kidz and Waypoint for Teens. Waypoint is an alternative to the traditional Sunday School experience whose name is inspired by a navigational tool that guides a traveler toward a certain destination.

Every child and teen (and the grownups who love them) is unique and moves along their own pathways.   GPS Zone honors the God-shaped design and potential of every one! At the same time we stay focused on one goal:   to live on mission with God as the Lord renews the face of the earth through each and all of us!
