Region 4 MRC held its annual recognition and training event on Saturday, November 1 at Norwich Free Academy for 50 volunteers. The theme of the event was "Global Connections in Health". Attendees learned about Ebola and other outbreaks around the world from guest speaker Dr. Lynn Sosa, DPH Epidemiologist. Cindy Arpin and Fred Potter shared a presentation on their trip to Haiti and the treatment of Cholera patients at the St. Philomena Rehydration Center. Volunteers were each recognized for their service to the MRC during the past year. There was extra reason to celebrate:  three of the 2014 statewide Citizen Corps MRC awards recipients are from Region 4: Patricia Huband (Uncas Health District MRC), Leonna White (Uncas Health District MRC), and Kris Magnussen (Ledge Light Health District MRC).

MRC Volunteers Participate in Drive-through Mass Flu Shot Clinic

By Kris Magnussen

 Dis23_2

Thank you to the volunteers who showed up on October 18, 2014 to volunteer at the Drive-Thru to Beat the Flu mass dispensing clinic at Walmart in Waterford. It was a cold and rainy day but it didn't keep 191 people from getting vaccinated.

A special thank you goes out to Catherine Dragoo for all of her work in pulling the clinic together. I also want to thank Mary Buckley-Davis and Steve Mansfield for all of their support. A special MRC thank you goes to Sue Dubb RN from Uncas Health District, who assumed the role as the clinic manager.  As always, thanks to Derek May and Brittany Otto from NDDH for being great regional partners.

The Ledge Light Health District and the Ledge Light MRC could not have done the drive-thru without the wonderful help from the other MRC units in Region 4. A special thank you to our traffic monitors, East Lyme CERT and the East Lyme Police Cadets, who once again did an outstanding job.

The Salvation Army canteen was there to provide warm beverages and snacks for clinic participants.

Workshop: Recognizing a Violent Situation

By Robin Lucas

Dis23_3
On October 29, 2014, the Pomperaug Health District MRC sponsored a workshop for volunteers on "How to Recognize and Survive a Violent Situation". The workshop was facilitated by Tom Ashmore Enterprises, Inc.

Nearly 50 people attended the workshop, representing several Medical Reserve Corps units, CERT teams, police departments, hospitals, and ambulance associations.  We had several emergency management directors in attendance, and local public health officials.

Topics included:  identifying and defining violence; statistics and case studies; and exercises in situational awareness.  The facilitators guided attendees through a "R.I.D.E." demonstration, during which they learn to Recognize a potentially violent situation; Identify their options for response, including running, hiding, or fighting; Deciding on their best course of action; and Executing their plan.  Emphasis was placed on working cooperatively with police upon their arrival at the scene, and the importance of having a plan in place at home, work, and mass gatherings.

Attendees were given course materials, including guidebooks and links to online resources. Feedback from the event has been very positive, and the workshop provided an excellent avenue for MRC volunteer recruitment and promotion.
