Rev. Buckman US Air Force Chaplaincy Deployment
|
 | | Rev. Buckman with his family, after being awarded the MSM at Whiteman AFB in 2008 |
The Rev. Jim Buckman, Urban Mission Strategist for the LCMS New Jersey District - and a Major in the US Air Force, stationed with the New Jersey Air National Guard at McGuire Air Force Base in Wrightstown - will be deployed in Southwest Asia beginning December 30. Pastor Buckman writes, "I am currently scheduled to be the Deputy Chaplain for a chapel team which does 50 worship services and Bible studies every week." While he is overseas, Pastor Buckman hopes to stay connected with district congregations and church planters through the House Church Planter website, as well as through online Bible study & worship opportunities connecting service men & women with their Christian families back at home. The NJ District hopes to have regular updates about Pastor Buckman's chaplaincy work, and will be sharing news and prayer needs as appropriate. Continued financial support for Urban Ministry in the New Jersey District while Pastor Buckman is deployed will help ensure that this important ministry can resume uninterrupted upon his return. Our churches, writes Pastor Buckman, will also "have the opportunity to send care packages to the troops." Pastor Buckman's address will be (as of December 30): James Buckman

LCMS Disaster Response: Midwest Tornadoes & Typhoon Haiyan
|
MIDWEST TORNADOES: The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) has granted $10,000 for immediate tornado relief to St. John's Lutheran Church in New Minden, Ill. The check was presented to the congregation at a communitywide prayer vigil on November 20 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoyleton, Ill. At least 13 families in New Minden including six members of the congregation lost their homes when a tornado struck Nov. 17. The church - a charter congregation of the LCMS formed in 1846 - also suffered extensive damage when high winds toppled the steeple and tore much of the roof from the building. Additionally, the original church building, which had been moved to the present site, was left a pile of rubble by the tornado. "St. John's asked for emergency dollars to be used right now," said the Rev. Bart Day, executive director of the LCMS Office of National Mission, who will make the check presentation. "They want to reach out to their community in tangible ways as soon as possible, including with gift cards to help with shelter, food and clothing."
TYPHOON HAIYAN: A team from the LCMS departed for the Philippines Friday, Nov. 15, to provide immediate relief and begin planning for the long-term recovery in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan. | | Click the image above to visit the LCMS Blog & listen to an audio report from the Rev. Ross Johnson, director of LCMS Disaster Response. |
Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms on record, slammed into the Philippines Friday, November 8. Three Lutheran Church of the Philippines congregations are in the hardest hit area. At least one church and parsonage were destroyed as were individual homes, crops and livestock. The team will operate out of the LCMS field office in Manila and make trips into the affected areas from there. Team members will take only basic essentials in their carry-on backpacks, including anti-malarial medicines, mosquito nets, boots, durable clothing and some food. Conditions are expected to be harsh. LCMS Disaster Response serves to deliver the mercy of Jesus Christ to people suffering as a result of natural and man-made disasters. The ministry's hallmark is its model of providing both immediate relief and long-term recovery assistance. Learn more.

Almighty God and Father, in Your great love You created and still preserve all things in heaven and on earth. You have called into being all things seen and unseen. You are the source and origin of human life, for You created us male and female in Your image. In Your providential care, You have given us all that we are and all that we have, for our use in this life to care for our neighbors and ourselves. You set history in motion, from its onset in the Garden of Eden through its apex in the person and work of Your beloved Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. You also have ordained an end to all things, that the redemption that is in Christ Jesus may be granted its fulfillment throughout all creation. Therefore, teach us to number our days aright, according to Your great mercy, that we may be granted hearts of wisdom and be made faithful in Christ Jesus, ever watchful and prepared for His return at the consummation of all things on the Last Day.
