Issue 200

Dear ,
Labor Day weekend is approaching.  Consider joining us for Open Shabbes at Sanctuary.  If you want to have dinner and stay over Friday night we have a special rate this weekend!   More information below.

Our focus this Shabbat is on labor, the teachings related to work and workers in Judaism and the issues surrounding workers wages and workers rights today.  Jews United for Justice, an organization that we helped found, is focused on this concern and has, for years, designated this Shabbat as "Labor on the Bimah."

A teaching from this week's Parsha, Re'eh, will give you a sense of our ancient commitment to act justly.   From Deuteronomy 15.

"At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts. This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel any loan they have made to a fellow Israelite. They shall not require payment from anyone among their people, because God's time for canceling debts has been proclaimed.
There need be no poor people among you, for in the land the Eternal your God is giving you as your inheritance, you will be fully blessed, if only you fully obey these teachings I am giving you today...

If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land, Eternal your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them. Rather, be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need....Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Eternal your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to....There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow, the poor and needy in your land..."

If you have a minute please check out JUFJ website and their efforts for advocating for a Living Wage, Sick Pay and issues affecting our labor force in Maryland and D.C. Today.  To go the link at JUFJ.

"Chesed  U-MIshpat Ashirah."   "Of love and justice I will sing..."  Psalm 101:1

B'Shalom,

Reb David
