Landry Exhibit Draws 50,000 Visitors During First Week of State Fair

Landry

"Remembering Tom Landry: The Personal Connection" offered by the Dallas Historical Society at the Hall of State,  is the acknowledged blockbuster of the 2010 State Fair of Texas after drawing more than 50,000 visitors during the first week.

"We knew that folks in Dallas cherished their memories of Tom Landry and are appreciative that his widow, Alicia Landry, offered family memorabilia for the exhibit and Oncor stepped up as sponsor, to make this exhibit possible," said Max Wells, chairman of the Dallas Historical Society.

Items from the private collection of Tom and Alicia Landry, including several of his trademark fedora hats, are included in this display along with family photographs plus mementos from his high school football days in Mission, TX and his military service during World War II. His experience as a University of Texas football star and his days as a player/coach for the New York Giants are documented. Next come his Cowboy years, complete with Super Bowl trophies, Hall of Fame coats and awards as well as multiple autographed footballs.  The final section of the display is "life after football" including a video of his public funeral at the Meyerson Symphony Center.

"We've had lines outside the building and down the plaza, even on weekdays," said Historical Society Director Jack Bunning. "When Texas-OU fans see our huge banner facing the Esplanade, this weekend will probably exceed our wildest speculations about attendance.  If you live in Dallas or the suburbs, come next week or the week after!"
