We are more than halfway to reaching our goal in the Virtual Holiday Food Drive! With one final push between now and December 31, we will be able to raise the crucial funds necessary to provide nutritious meals to Mainers facing hunger this winter.

It's easy to participate - simply log on to the Virtual Food Drive page and either select from the items listed or enter a donation amount. Your gift will go directly toward providing healthy foods to our neighbors in need across the state.

Growing Season Wraps Up With a Harvest Celebration at the Food Bank

In November, local farmers, food pantry partners, funders and Food Bank staff gathered in Auburn for a celebration of the 2013 harvest. The Food Bank's Mainers Feeding Mainers program is providing fresh, local produce to hunger relief agencies throughout the state - and it's showcasing the power of collaboration in the process.

This year, we partnered with 20 farms to purchase fruits and vegetables for our hunger relief network. While we are still receiving some items, including root vegetables and apples, so far we have received 850,000 lbs. of local produce this season. Of that, the Food Bank purchased 400,000 lbs. and the additional 450,000 lbs. was donated by our farm partners.

New Food Bank Truck Hits the Road Thanks to Walmart

The Food Bank was recently awarded a new 24-foot refrigerated truck from Walmart, which will help us pick up and distribute nutritious food throughout Maine. This truck is one of eight new vehicles that Walmart gave to food banks nationwide this fall.

Although the truck is funded through a Walmart grant, the vehicle will be used to help secure fresh, perishable food from all of the Food Bank's retail partners across Maine.

Good Shepherd Food Bank receives generous support from Walmart in many forms, including food donations from retail stores and from the distribution center in Lewiston, financial support from the Walmart Foundation, and volunteer time from the company's employees.
