MLHS ATTENDENCE
ML realizes that there are many mornings when the weather plays a factor in the timeliness of the students arrival at school. It is very important as well that students are learning the importance of being on-time for appointments. A general rule of thumb is that 10 minutes early is right on time. Learning how to navigate the time that may be necessary to get to school in the morning is one way that they can learn this important skill.
Please encourage your child to leave at an appropriate time, and when the roads are slippery due to weather, that they leave a little earlier. If you believe that they are going to be late due to weather, please call Amy Sievert (269-429-7861 ex.201) and let her know. That way they will receive a "weather-related" tardy rather than an unexcused tardy. If we do not hear from a parent in the morning, we are unable to judge why they are tardy and therefore they will be marked unexcused. Thank you for your help!

Robotics at ML
Michigan Lutheran students have the opportunity to join a multi-school FIRST Robotics team. Our team, "CW Tech Team Robotarians" is a US F.I.R.S.T. (For inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition team started in 2008, consisting of high school students from Coloma, Watervleit, Eau Clare, Grace Christian, LMC and MLHS
MLHS student members this year are Cody Laughlin and Noah Russell. Our first competition is on March 8-9 at Gull Lake. The Following week we will be in competition at Saint Joseph High School. Please come down to Saint Joseph High School on Saturday March 16 to watch this exhilarating competition
FIRST Robotics mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.
Called "The varsity Sport for the Mind," FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It's as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
Every year, at the beginning of January, the FIRST Organization launches a completely new and challenging game. For the next 6 weeks, each of the over 150 Michigan (and over 2,000 international) teams, designs, constructs, and tests a robot to accomplish the numerous tasks comprising the game. During this period the students devote about 1300-1500 man-hours towards successful completion of the robot. Afterward, the team competes with about 40 other teams at 2 of 7 Michigan district events. Based on the results of these events, a state-wide for all the Michigan Teams is created. Those Teams winning an event, an event award, or ranking high enough on the state-wide rankings qualifies to go to the State Championship.
All of the expenses for the robot construction, travel, lodging, for the CW Tech Team are obtained by student-directed fundraising activities, such as local business donations, school vending machine sales, pancake breakfasts, and raffles. NO DIRECT FUNDING COMES FROM THE SCHOOLS.
USFIRST is an organization that promotes more than just building and competing with a robot. They also support, "gracious professionalism" by designing the competitions to reinforce inter-team cooperation. In addition, awards are given at each of the direct and State events for team community service activities, mentoring, and citizenship. Direct and National awards are also given for drafting/design, 3D animation, mentoring, and several others.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED
Michigan Lutheran High School has been blessed the last few years to be a part of International programs that place foreign students in our care. MLHS has recently received approval to accept students who are here on an F1 visa to study full-time in the United States. Because of this amazing opportunity, MLHS will be hosting a number of international students next year. In order to do so, ML families must generously open their homes to these very special visitors. Several options will be available to host families in the coming school year. If you would like to open your home, or if you would like to learn more about this exciting experience, please contact either Mrs. Sievert in the front ML Office, or Mrs. Plocher, International Advisor. Our international students add much to our campus family. Please consider becoming a part of this unique opportunity.

Please bring magazines to the MLHS Office. The Art Department is in need of them for Projects. Thanks!
