August 2014
NEWS & NOTES
from Ephraim Faience Art Pottery & Tile

Welcome!
Welcome to our August newsletter! We hope you have been enjoying summer and have been making the most of it in whatever ways you enjoy most. As this month winds down and summer vacations come to an end, our thoughts begin to turn to fall and the activities it brings. In the meantime, have some watermelon and lemonade, sit on the deck and watch the sunset, and maybe attend a festival or two. Routine will return soon enough.

This month's NEWS...

Did you receive your catalog?
Our 2014 catalog was mailed on July 23. It was sent to customers who have ordered from us over the past five years as well as customers who made purchases at our galleries. If you did not receive a print catalog but would like one, please fill out our catalog request form and we will mail one to you. If you have any questions or would like to report a change of address, please email info@ephraimpottery.com.

In addition to all of the pieces in our new Studio Collection, the catalog also includes information about our tile frames and stands, portraits, urns, and behind-the-scenes information about our process. Beautiful photos provide creative display ideas and illustrate the different color options for each piece.

Many customers tell us they enjoy looking at their catalogs and go back to them again and again. It's kind of like the old "wish book," but for grown-ups who love pottery. If you're one of those techie types who favors digital over paper, you can browse our complete selection of pottery, tile, and frames on our website. Paper, digital or both - choose whatever works best for you. It's good to have options.
Cambria Scarecrow Festival coming soon
The Cambria Scarecrow Festival is coming up soon and once again Ephraim Pottery will be joining in the fall fun.

The festival, which started in 2009 with 30 scarecrows, has become a major tourist attraction. Last year, over 400 scarecrows were on display in the business districts of Cambria and neighboring San Simeon. Workshops on topics such as making papier-mache heads and weather-proofing your scarecrow are held to encourage residents and business owners to participate. Last year, prizes were awarded in six categories including "Best Animation," "Most Unique," and "Most Lifelike." Yes, "Best Animation." Unless you've attended this festival, you've probably never seen - or imagined - scarecrows like these. View last year's scarecrows

This year, Ephraim Pottery West will be vying for a win in the "Most Likely to Scare People or Crows" category with its spooky "Punkinhead" entry. Just like the rest of our work, our scarecrow is a collaborative effort. Paul threw the pumpkin form, Laura did the sculpting, Leah painted the head, and John created the frame for the scarecrow form. Now it's up to Shari and her team to put all the pieces together before the festival begins on September 22.

October is a great time of year to visit Cambria. Make sure you stop by Ephraim Pottery West when you visit!

Employee Spotlight: Kathleen Marlo

Kathleen Marlo is a part-time sales associate at Ephraim Pottery West. She joined the company shortly before the new gallery opened and helped Shari with those all-important final details. Friendly, knowledgeable, and conscientious, Kathleen is a great asset to the company and a valued member of the EFP team.

Q&A with Kathleen

Why did you choose your current career?

I like the freedom of creative expression and I also am curious about the history of what was going on in society during the time different styles evolved. So I studied at U.C. Santa Cruz and completed my B.A. in Art History. I wanted to focus on museum and gallery management so I earned my Master's degree in Museum Studies from San Francisco State University.

What inspires you?

I love the many ways I get inspired. Some of my favorites include nature; music; and working together with others towards a creative common goal.

If you could travel back in time, what era would you visit and why?

The 1920s. It seems like a time when America was enjoying personal freedom and prosperity.
