Parting Words

The boxes have started to fill and move to the car and (eventually) to the post office. Where did the last 10 months go?

Once again, thank you--all of you--for supporting Dorisa, Oskar, and me during our time in Alaska. You are evidence that the Holy Spirit is at work in this place and this community. We are so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Gloria Dei. I have learned more things than I expected, and I will take those lessons and this place with me. However, before I leave there are a few more memories that I would like to make.

At some point, the trails will start to clear and the mountains will look green and brown instead of just white. Do you have a favorite hike or trail? a favorite scenic overlook? Come and hike them with us! I call this the "Tell the Intern to Take a Hike" program. There will be a sign-up sheet on the fireside room door. The name of the program should really be something nicer, like "Come hiking with the intern and his wife because they value you and your knowledge of the area as permanent Alaskan residents"... but that's too long, and it's less funny. Let's see how many hikes we can do in June!

Speaking of June and all the activities that summer brings... Often the summer weekends are used to go to the cabin, fish, hike, grill, kayak, and so many other things that church sometimes gets lost in the shuffle. I'm not saying this to make anyone feel guilty but as a way of lifting up the summer Service of Holy Communion that begins on Wednesday, May 29, at 7pm. This service is for those of you who, because of your work schedules, are only able to get to the cabin on the weekend; for those of you who would like to hear the Word in the midst of your busy week; for those of you who want to sleep late on Sunday mornings or for whatever reason you might have; this service is for everyone because it is important not to take a vacation from hearing the Good News that God is for you.

Regardless of the day of the week, we are made to know of God's love in Christ's life, death, and resurrection; we are able to experience His love in the bread and wine which Christ gave us to celebrate the promise of forgiveness and in which the Holy Spirit strengthens us and stirs us to greater service to our neighbors. So please come and celebrate our life in Christ this summer at Gloria Dei on Wednesday or Sunday or both, and know that God made the Sabbath--not so a bunch of people would make God feel important, but rather that we need to hear how God calls us important and loved. We gather to hear God's Word because God knows that we need it and that we are strengthened all the more when we hear it together.

I thank you for the ways in which you have let me be involved in your congregation's life. It wasn't a conventional internship; it wasn't an easy internship; but it was certainly a good internship. It was not without confusion and uncertainty, but life is full of (in the words of an ancient, famous prayer) "ventures of which we cannot see the ending." One of my favorite Bible verses and a verse that was important to me this year, especially when things felt uncertain, is Romans 8:26: "Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words."

That Spirit is with you and me wherever we go and is at work in many ways. I was blessed to see the Spirit at work here.

God's peace, Dan

Note from Jess - Why we do what we do

Every once in a while, it seems like one topic pops up constantly--often in random places. For me, the topic of kids in worship has been almost constantly present for the last couple of months. I have heard arguments for and against, as well as a LOT of questions about why each congregation approaches children the way they do. In case this topic has invaded your life like it has mine, I thought I would let you know why Gloria Dei welcomes children in worship with open arms, smiles, and the occasional silly face over the hymnal.

Essentially, church is all about community--about the inclusion of every member of that community. From the oldest to the youngest. From the loudest to the quietest. From the rowdiest to the most reserved. This place is for everyone. As soon as one group is removed from the equation, this message changes. For a child, this is especially profound. When children are removed from the worship setting, the message they hear is "this is not for you." Studies have shown that these kids do not lose this feeling as they get older, and very few remain in the church as adults. Intentional or not, these actions carry heavy consequences.

At Gloria Dei, children are not just welcomed into worship, they are embraced! Each Sunday I watch as you go out of your way to share the peace with them, call them by name, and ask them about their lives. Your smiles are genuine and your welcome is heartfelt. You constantly show them that they are an important part of this community by supporting their fundraisers and encouraging them in their ministries. A few weeks ago when Clayton Gellerman, son of Scott and Gwen Gellerman, led us in the Psalm, I noticed that I was not the only one tearing up.

Gloria Dei has a rich history of supporting their children in their faith. What an incredible gift to hand to the youngest among us! Thank you.

Farewell to Dan, Dorisa, and Oskar

As the time nears for our intern pastor Dan Nelson to return to Minnesota to complete his seminary education, we must prepare to say our goodbyes. Dan will remain in Alaska a week longer than the rest of his family, so the Intern Committee has planned a send-off for Dorisa and Oskar on Sunday morning, June 16. Everyone is invited to gather after the 9:30 worship service to wish them farewell in the way we do best--a potluck! So bring a dish to share and join the fellowship in the fireside room, where we'll be lining up for a turn to hold Oskar one last time before they head out.

Then on June 30, Dan's last Sunday at Gloria Dei, plan to join us for a BBQ brunch after 9:30 worship to wish Dan "Bon Voyage." Again, bring some food to share and enjoy some grilled deliciousness. We'll be outdoors (pray for sunshine) and in the fireside room--come and wish our intern well as he moves on to his next adventure!

Transition Update

Two Updates from the Church Council: First, the Mission Development Committee has finished a draft of the congregational survey that will be an important milestone in the interim process before our congregation can call a new pastor. The Council will complete a final review of the survey in the next few weeks. The Mission Development Committee meets again on Tuesday, June 4, and will be reviewing the next steps included in the instructional materials on the interim process provided by the Synod.

Second, the Council has been dealing with the complicated issues of trying to be more strategic and more efficient as well as considering how to reform some of our constitutional committees which are currently not functioning. Our goal is to work toward supporting them in some of the work of the church.

Please stay tuned for more information!

Vacation Bible School

Before we know it, Vacation Bible School time will be upon us! Mark your calendars for August 4-8. We will be bringing counselors up from Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp. If you can help by donating air miles or hosting one or more of these counselors, please talk to Jess.

Off to Flathead Bible Camp

This summer we have 17 kids heading to Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp in Montana. Yes, you read that right--17 kids! Please keep these young people and the adults in your prayers as we spend a week learning about God, meeting new people, playing crazy games, and worshiping the incredible Creator of all. We will be in Montana July 6-13. Thank you for your amazing support of this ministry!

Summer Months are "About the Kids"

Help Feed the Kids

Now that school is out for the summer, we're asking for help in feeding hungry kids through LSSA's food distribution program--those kids who cannot take advantage of school breakfasts and lunches during their summer break, many whose families are among the working poor. We're hoping to make a difference for families with children by providing healthy, nutritious favorites; for example, spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, tuna and tuna helper, soup, canned fruit, peanut butter, graham crackers--those same favorites of our children or grandchildren. You may put your gifts in the LSSA barrel in the Social Ministry corner, and we'll do the rest. If you would like more details, give a call to Marcia DeVoe (243-1317), Marge Paulson (243-5480), or Darla Siver (223-2662); they'll be happy to talk to you about Gloria Dei's outreach programs and ways in which you can help.

Mark the dates for our ongoing projects and please help as you are able:

Br Francis Shelter, Tuesday, June 11; Clare House, Thursday, June 20

HUGSS (Helping Us Give School Supplies) and Coats for Kids

It seems that summer break just started, but for Lutheran Social Services of Alaska--sharing in a community partnership with Catholic Social Services and the Salvation Army--it's not too early to be gearing up to help kids whose families don't have the resources to purchase adequate school supplies and/or warm winter outerwear for school in the fall.

Since 2001, when the HUGSS program began, it has served over 55,000 students--all made possible through donations of supplies, coats, and dollars from people like us. This year, they expect to serve more families than ever. We hope that Gloria Dei can be an important partner in this ministry, ensuring that all kids will have supplies to start school--just like the rest of their classmates.

In addition to basic school supplies (24-pack crayons, markers, pencils, 1" binders, scissors, and rulers), the wish list includes new or gently used winter clothing (coats and snow pants in all sizes as well as hats and mittens). If you like to knit, consider cleaning out your yarn stash and whipping up a hat or 2 or 3--HUGSS can use as many as they can get.

PLEASE CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING. Distribution of supplies and coats is scheduled for the week of August 11 at the Sullivan Arena. More details will be available soon. If you have time to help, you may select a block of time on Catholic Social Services' Web site (cssalaska.org).

Thank you all for your care and compassion and for your willingness to make a difference in our community.

"Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." Heb. 13:1-2

Don't Forget . . .

Our summer worship schedule has begun. There will be one worship service on Sunday mornings at 9:30 followed by an adult Bible study at 10:30. We'll have our midweek worship at 7:00 p.m. each Wednesday evening.

Note: There will be no Wednesday evening worship on July SmrWrship 3.

Dear Friends and Family,
It is close to being true that David and I will be going to Xining China and Yushu Tibet around the end of May through December.

It all began two years ago when I spent six weeks visiting friends in Xining China who were teaching at the Xining International School; and while I was there, a substitute teacher was needed for the Pre-K class (of six students)! The students were from Korea, United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, China, and the U.S. The parents of the Danish student, Dr. Tom and Karen Hojberg, were studying languages and preparing to assist with medical training in Tibet where that terrible earthquake happened in 2010.

Well, in November they sent an e-mail asking if we knew of a teacher who would come along with them to Tibet to teach their children, so they could commit fully to the time needed for the medical training of local Tibetans. It was David who bit the bullet and said, "why don't we go?" So that started a very long process, and now we have received the necessary papers from China and are waiting for our visas from this end.

You can read more about the NGO (non government organization) Tibetan project at http://www.plateauperspectives.org.

We will be sending out an e-mail letter from time to time, and if you would like to receive these messages, do let us know via our new e-mail account which we have set up for China correspondence only.

If/when you write to us, we would caution you NOT to use the words "prayer, Jesus, God, Bible"; instead substitute words like "thinking of you," "Father," "word," etc.

This is an exciting new adventure for us, and we do covet your "thinking of us."
