Basic Homemade Explosive Materials Course

17-19 September 2013
22-24 October 2013

Location: Gettysburg, PA
 (if you host a course at your location we will give you 3 free seats per 15 students)

The Basic HME Course is a three-day training program which focuses on stopping the clandestine proliferation of improvised energetic material that can be used in association with criminal and terrorist activities. The course material is presented by both classroom instruction as well as live field demonstrations and student interactions.

 

 

This course is useful for law enforcement, military EOD/public safety bomb technicians, hazardous materials technicians, fire response, emergency medical service, and military units involved in combating terrorism and protecting our homeland.

 

 

For those students who are also Explosive Detection K-9 handlers you will be given an opportunity to run your dog on a variety of Homemade Explosive formulations to include TATP. (You will have the opportunity to train your K-9 on a large hide).

New Course Additions and Dates:
 

Advanced Search Techniques

 

In this class the student will learn about proper aid placement to get the most out of the aid or to conceal the odor. In this class we will be doing a lot of practical exercises with the K9's partnering with EOD techs learning proper leash control and using all the elements to your advantage.  In this class you will be dealing with Improvised Explosive Devices that will be in a more operational setting then just doing conventional hides.  The student will also be taught the proper way to handle explosives and learn the characteristics of explosives.

Criminal Interdiction

 

In this class the student will learn recognition of contraband and homemade explosives labs along with clandestine labs and safety. The student will learn the key elements in developing reasonable suspicion and what to do once that has been established. The student will also learn how to look beyond the ticket and how to conduct a roadside interview. The student will also learn case law that will guide the officer in the interdiction of contraband. This class is for all patrol officers, and K9 officers. The student will also have interaction with a canine and will be given practical to show the proper use of a canine in such interdiction.

Odor Recognition Test

 

In this class the student will learn about odor and the training aids like it has never been taught before .  You will learn about the science of odor recognition and the importance of training to the target odor. This is important for the k9 to understand the scent tendrils of the illicit compounds and not the fillers this in turn will make the k9 very efficient and eliminate false alerts due to odors. This class is the most cutting age of its kind where science and operator are in collaboration. This class is a necessity for all k9 handlers.

Tripwire's Newest Addition: 
Austin Moon, Program Manager- K9

Austin Moon is currently a program manager for Tripwire K9 Services, a division of Tripwire Operations Group. Austin brings to Tripwire Operations Group an extensive background in not just K9 but all facets of Law Enforcement, including but not limited to, internet investigations, drug and alcohol interdiction, and traffic enforcement. Austin instructs highly specialized explosives courses for both the military and civilian first responders to prepare against chemical, biological, radiological/nuclear and explosives threats (Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings). Austin's previous work experience includes 8 years as a Deputy Sheriff K9 handler, 5 years as an Army military working dog handler and 3 years as a police officer involved in private industry.  Moon has worked all disciplines of K9 law enforcement, including patrol, tracking/obedience, narcotic and explosives.  He has worked on special projects such as Tri Rivers Narcotic Taskforce, Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce (ICAC) and Northern Neck Narcotic Taskforce. 

 

Austin continuously advances his skillset through courses such as:  DEA Patrol Drug Enforcement, VCPI Patrol Drug Interdiction, 420 Criminal Interdiction, New Mexico Tech IRTB and PRSBI, VCPI Terrorist Interdiction, John Reid Street Crimes, VCPI Advanced Search and Seizure, FBI Introduction to Improvised Explosives and Homeland Security IED Awareness for First Responders.    

 

Austin's previous teaching background includes instructing for the Virginia Police Work Dog Association Narcotic, Patrol, and Explosive schools. He has served as the Training Director for various Schutzhund clubs in the Southeast.    

 

Austin has a trained eye for identifying traits that produce top dual and single purpose Explosive and Narcotic K9 talent and enjoys helping others who share his passion for K9 law enforcement. Austin Moon is staying involved in law enforcement by maintaining employment as a K9 Deputy Sheriff at the Northumberland County Sheriffs Office..
