The Episcopal Church Welcomes You!

I can't believe August is already here and September is just around the corner.  The staff and lay leaders are working hard to ensure that things are ready to go, as we will soon begin another program year.

This is also a season for "church shopping."  Some folks will be "window shopping," simply curious - while others are truly seeking and longing for a church home. With this time quickly approaching, I have been mindful of the familiar dictum, "The Episcopal Church Welcomes You!"

How will we live these words not only in September but all year long?  Whether the folks are just stopping by to take a look or they are really looking for a home - we are called to welcome them as we would welcome Christ.

We are the Episcopal Church and ones who create a place of hospitality and welcome for ALL who walk through our doors.  Let us be keenly aware of how we welcome the friend and stranger.  Let us welcome with an inclusive and grace filled embrace.  How we welcome makes all the difference in the world.

And remember that actions speak louder than words!  Extend a hand of welcome.  Go out of your comfort zone and say, "Hello."  Invite someone to join you for coffee after the service.  Introduce a visitor to one or two other people. Ask if they would like to meet one of the clergy.  Welcome them as you would someone in your own home, even more so remember that we are welcoming people on behalf of Christ into the house of God.

Let us prepare our hearts and minds to welcome ALL who enter Trinity Church, remembering that Trinity Church Welcomes YOU... and that means everyone!

In Christ,
Paul+

(To be continued...Takin' it to the streets)

Sunday Nursery News

Our Sunday Nursery is on "hiatus" as we work to create a more consistent program involving parents, adult and youth volunteers, and paid nursery assistants.  A Nursery Task Force has just been formed and is in need of members!  The Nursery Task Force will develop a plan for the nursery program, incorporating volunteers, and discerning how best to care for our youngest members.  If you feel called to work with very young children, are interested in serving on the Task Force, and/or sharing in the volunteer nursery rota, please contact Nancy Hagner at hagnern@trinityprinceton.org or 609-924-2277, ext. 307. Orientation and training in "Safeguarding God's Children" is required.

Parents of children 3 years old and under will be receiving an email soon with details and a request to serve in the nursery rotation.

The Naked Now -- Learning to See as the Mystics See

by Richard Rohr

For Christians seeking a way of thinking outside of strict dualities, this guide explores methods for letting go of division and living in the present. Drawn from the Gospels, Jesus, Paul, and the great Christian contemplatives, this examination reveals how many of the hidden truths of Christianity have been misunderstood or lost and how to read them with the eyes of the mystics rather than interpreting them through rational thought. Filled with sayings, stories, quotations, and appeals to the heart, specific methods for identifying dualistic thinking are presented with simple practices for stripping away ego and the fear of dwelling in the present.

Toxic Charity - How Churches and Charities Hurt Those They Help (and How to Reverse It), by Robert D. Lupton

Veteran urban activist Robert Lupton reveals the shockingly toxic effects that modern charity has upon the very people meant to benefit from it. Toxic Charity provides proven new models for charitable groups who want to help-not sabotage-those whom they desire to serve. Lupton, the founder of FCS Urban Ministries (Focused Community Strategies) in Atlanta, the voice of the Urban Perspectives newsletter, and the author of Compassion, Justice and the Christian Life, has been at the forefront of urban ministry activism for forty years. Now, in the vein of Jeffrey Sachs's The End of Poverty, Richard Stearns's The Hole in Our Gospel, and Gregory Boyle's Tattoos on the Heart, his groundbreaking Toxic Charity shows us how to start serving needy and impoverished members of our communities in a way that will lead to lasting, real-world change.

A Trinity Sojourn: Prospect Park, Brooklyn

What an enjoyable and edifying outing we had on Saturday, July 20 in Prospect Park, Brooklyn!  Led by our resident horticulturalist extraordinaire, Hillary Delaney, a stalwart 6 in number braved the elements and spent the day walking, learning and picnicking in this true, urban oasis.  Along the Long Meadow, woodland paths, waterfalls and more, we learned of the park's history, sources, and unique characteristics that result in its reputation as Olmsted's gem.  According to our guide, "It is good to visit Prospect Park in the heat of the summer, so that you can imagine and understand what a beautiful and delightful refreshment this park was for the people of Brooklyn when it was made."

What a gift to the people of New York!  What a gift to Trinity to have a knowledgeable resource in Hillary!  Stay tuned for further sojourns of this nature and please join us if you can.

Volunteer Attorneys Needed to Help Staff Womanspace Legal Clinic....

Womanspace is looking for family law attorneys who would like to volunteer to assist survivors of domestic and sexual violence in our monthly Legal Clinic. The long-standing clinic offers vital support to our clients.

The goal of the Legal Clinic is to provide an opportunity for a one-time consultation that can help clients to clarify their unique situation and to explore their legal options. So many clients come to us with pending legal issues and this has been a successful way to help them begin their journey with the best information possible.

  • The Legal Clinic takes place at our Barbara and Herb Goodfriend Counseling Center at 1530 Brunswick Ave. in Lawrenceville.
  • Training on Womanspace and the work with survivors is provided to all attorneys who elect to volunteer.
  • After the initial training attorneys are asked to sign up for a regular schedule, although the schedule varies based on the number of available attorneys.
  • Client participation is voluntary and the consultation in no way obligates either client or attorney beyond the consult.
  • All communications between the client and attorney are confidential under the laws and attorney ethical standards of New Jersey.
  • Consultations are private and 35 minutes in duration. They are scheduled by appointment only, by Womanspace staff.

If this volunteer opportunity sounds like something you would be interested in, please contact Susan Victor, Director of Counseling, at (609) 394-2532, or via email at rsv@womanspace.org. Bilingual candidates (English & Spanish) are strongly encouraged to apply.

The mission of Womanspace is to Prevent Abuse, Protect Families and Change Lives through empowerment and a safety net of supportive services.

Womanspace is the lead non-profit agency serving Survivors and their families impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking in Mercer County, and also operates the NJ statewide domestic violence hotline: 800-572-SAFE.
