Pastoral Care logo Caring Hands
Trinity's Pastoral Care tradition is one of devoted clergy working hand in hand with trained lay ministers/ parishioners.

If you need - or someone you know is needing - spiritual tending, a way to ease the heaviness of an unwelcome burden, please contact us. Whether the need is acute or ongoing, as parishioners trained in various types of pastoral ministry we offer solace and support that reflects God's presence and healing power in our lives.

Life-altering situations - times of joy, sadness, illness or changing circumstances - often increase a yearning to be nurtured by our faith community, by its comforting prayers and acts of kindness. If now is one of those times for you, simply phone:

609-924-2277 ext. 350; or email: trinityprincetonclergy@gmail.com

Your message will go directly to clergy on call 24/7.

The Little Things

We may not like to admit it, but there's a part of us that can, on occasion, rear its ugly head.  It's an attitude of  "What have you done for me lately?!" We expect things.  We may even begin to demand them.  There are parts of our culture that increasingly operate from a place of expectations and demands - "What have you done for ME lately?!"  This kind of mindset and "soulset" can creep in quietly, under the radar, and then suddenly become the norm of our experience.

Wednesday, I looked up from my desk and saw a book I used to use regularly for daily devotions, "A Year With Dietrich Bonhoeffer - Daily Meditations from His Letters, Writings, and Sermons."  I was strangely drawn to the book, took it off the shelf and began to read.  Bonhoeffer was discussing how we come together as the Church, the Body of Christ, and how we live together as community.  A fundamental characteristic of Christian community has to be one of thanksgiving.  We are to live, worship, and serve together from a place of thankfulness.

It makes all the difference in the world how we come to church.  Do we come with demands and unrealistic expectations or do we come humbly from a place of thanksgiving and gratitude?  Bonhoeffer writes, "we come not as those who make demands, but as those who receive thankfully."  (Life Together, p. 36) We don't come to church saying, "What have you done for me lately?!"  Rather, we come with an attitude of gratitude and a spirit of thankfulness.

Bonhoeffer goes on to say, "Only those who give thanks for the little things receive the great things well."  (Life Together, p. 37)   How we receive the "little things" says a lot, and more than we may think. Do we offer thanks for the mundane things of life, the things of the day in - day out routine of our existence?  Or, have we grown to expect those "little things," even going so far as to demand them?

God blesses us with "little things" everyday.  Yet, at times, we can grow so accustomed to those blessings that we no longer see and experience them for the true beauty and gift they are.  This day I encourage you (And me!)  to give thanks for the "little things."  The abundance of God's goodness all around us that can so often go unnoticed.

One orientation shows us a world that is lacking, scarce and will continually leave us wanting and unsatisfied.  The other orientation opens for us a world of blessing, grace, love and abundance.  A world where God is present, alive, and active.  I know in which world I would rather live!  What about you?  The funny thing is...it's the same world -- it's how we approach it and experience it that makes the difference.  One way demands, the other gives thanks.

Thank you God for all the little things!!

Peace,
Paul+

The parish offices will be open 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 9:00 am through 12:00 noon on Fridays.

With fewer events taking place and many people being away, we will also be reducing the number of times we publish the E-pistle over the summer.

The survey is now closed.  Thanks to all who took the time to complete it.   We received 166 completed surveys for a total participation rate of 46%.  We are thrilled with that response - anything over 30 % is considered excellent - so Trinity, of course, overachieved!

What happens next?  Our consultant and her team will take the survey results and shape them into a report, which will be presented to the Vestry in June.  This report will give us a clearer idea of the will of the parish  - which projects are supported, how much money we really can raise and what projects may have been missed.  After reviewing the report, the Vestry will make a decision as regards the level of the campaign and moving forward.  It's an exciting time so stay tuned.

Calling All Trinity Mugs

Do you have any Trinity Church mugs at home or at your office?  The Pastoral Care Flower Ministry needs them!  Each wee

k, the Altar Guild creates small flower arrangements in Trinity mugs from the altar flowers they take down.  Volunteers from Pastoral Care deliver these arrangements to parishioners and other folks in the Princeton community who may need a "touch" from Trinity.  We need more mugs and are hoping that you will consider donating any you have to this outreach ministry.

Mugs may be dropped off at the Reception desk.

For more information about the Flower Ministry,  to volunteer to deliver, or to suggest folks who might like flowers delivered one week, please contact Nancy Hagner at hagnern@trinityprinceton.org or 609-924-2277, ext. 307.

One Table Cafe

Seeking Committee Co-Chairs

to Coordinate Dinners

One Table Cafe
Join a team of dedicated, experienced and knowledgeable One Table Cafe committee members! Meg Hannington and Don Mann have run these highly successful dinners for two years. They are looking to retire and need two new co-chairs to step forward. Their plan is to have a chair-elect or co-chairs-elect in place to shadow them for the April and May dinners and then take over in September, when One Table Cafe resumes. What's important to understand is that the systems are in place, individual committee members are dedicated to specific functions within the system and what is required is one or two people to oversee it all.  If you might be interested in this role and want to better understand what it would involve, please let Meg (menoha8@aol.com) or Don (donald_mann@b-f.com) know!

News From the Iconographer in Residence

Did you know that Trinity had such a thing? I was consecrated as such at the 11 o'clock service on Sunday, March 17th (an auspicious day for an iconographer of Irish descent). Prior to the service I led the Forum hour, and a number of those who attended asked for a copy of my remarks, which are attached here. I am humbled and excited by the prospect of serving Trinity Church in this ministry.

I hope you will all visit the exhibition of icons (including two of mine) currently on view at the Princeton Theological Seminary's Erdman Art Gallery. The exhibition was the subject of a lengthy article in the Town Topics, which you can read here. I will offer one or two guided tours of the exhibition during Forum hour in May and June. Stay tuned for those dates.

Finally (for now), the 17th annual icon workshop will be held here at Trinity Church July 7th - 12th. We are once again privileged to have Vladislav Andrejev, founder of the Prosopon School of Iconology, coming to lead the workshop. If you have been tempted to take the workshop in the past but are intimidated because you have no artistic training, I assure you that you can write an icon. Beginning students are given a sketch to trace, and all pigments are  mixed for you and you are given step-by-step instructions. Please be in touch with any questions you have! More information about the workshop and a registration form are attached here.

May is Ehlers-Danlos Awareness Month

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a connective tissue disorder that causes loose joints and fragile skin, blood vessels and organs. People with this condition have a very difficult time getting diagnosis and treatment because doctors do not know enough about it. There is currently no cure, but the world's first research and treatment clinic will open in 2014. Please learn more by visiting the links found on the web at eds.dyadic.org
