Holy week...what's that?

Unfortunately each year more and more people are asking the question, "Holy Week...what's that?"  Part of March Madness? The lead-up to the Super Bowl?

In Kentucky, my home state, Holy Week is Derby Week. Churchill Downs is sacred space, indeed. With a mixture of nostalgic tears and joy we sing our favorite hymn, "My Old Kentucky Home." There is a beautiful array of holy vestments in one-of-a-kind derby outfits and jockey silks. The liturgical procession, as horses make their way from the paddock onto the track, is as grand as one will ever see. And what is a holy occasion without a holy drink? The Mint Julep for a Kentuckian is sacred nectar.

We are living in a world where notions of the holy and sacred are becoming more and more foreign. Now all too often, we hear the word "holy" followed by an expletive. In this generation, many young people have never even been in a sacred space, never been in a synagogue, mosque, or church.

We hear and see stories of Passover, Ramadan and Easter, but for far too many people these are thought of as antiquated and irrelevant ritual acts and practices of superstitious, uneducated and fragile people.

Yes, rooted in history and tradition, but by no means an artifact - as relevant today as always, or even more so - this week Christians around the world enter a most holy and sacred time. We will walk the Way of the Cross. We will experience a transformative journey of promise, hope, betrayal, fear, death, silence, and rejoicing - the most celebrated week of our faith.

Through the days of Holy Week, we gather on Palm Sunday for Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem. On Maundy Thursday we meet in the upper room for the last supper. We wash one another's feet as a symbol of humble service and an expression of lavish love. We hear the words, "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." (John 13:34-35) We go to the garden and see our Lord betrayed. We keep vigil until dawn. We weep at the foot of the cross. The cry of our Lord, the cry of humanity, echoes in our souls, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46) We wait in the darkness and silence of death. We awake on Easter morning to the glorious sound of joy, "Alleluia. Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed." (The Book of Common Prayer, p. 294).

In this most holy season, Christians experience yet again the powerful and transformative story of the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We experience God's promise of life conquering death and hope overcoming despair, reminding us that darkness and death do not have the last word. Light does. Life does.

Without Easter there is no Christian faith. Easter defines us. We are an Easter people. We are a resurrection people. Because of Easter, we, as Christians, are sent forth to proclaim good news to all the world, to be a people of light and life.

This week as we live into the fullness of Holy Week,  I invite you

live in such a way as to expand the notion of what is sacred and holy, knowing that Holy Week is not just one week in early spring limited to those of the Christian faith. Every week is holy, every day is sacred, every moment is an opportunity to open ourselves to the possibilities of all that is holy and sacred in our world, all that is of God.

Holy Week...what is it?   It's the week that tells the story of the human condition, reminds us of God's unconditional love for all of humanity, and calls us to be people of life and love. It's a week not just for Christians, but a week for all humankind.

Blessed Holy Week to all.

Paul+

March 24
_____________________________

Our first gatherings for our new evening service, Oasis have truly been wonderful times of fellowship and worship with both new and familiar faces.

We will continue to gather at 5:30pm each Sunday except the first of the month, on which we encourage everyone to attend Evensong at 4:00pm. This month, we will gather for Oasis again on March 10th, 17th, and 24th.

We hope this service will offer an opportunity for everyone to participate, and so we are looking for people to volunteer for these roles:
1)Worship leaders (family/group to do readings, prayers, chalice, cross, etc.)
2)Host family (hand out bulletins, collect offering, present bread and wine)
There will be other opportunities to help as well, and we will show you how to do each role so no experience is needed. Please let Paul+ or Jenny+ know if you would like to help.

Possible Capital Campaign -- Next Step --
Feasibility Study

The capital campaign study group has collated the Dreamcatcher responses and has submitted to the Vestry a capital campaign wish list based on all of the information gathered to date.  The next step will be to determine whether the parish believes that a campaign makes sense and is achievable.

We have engaged the Episcopal Church Foundation to help us in our discernment.  In April, everyone will receive a written summary of the proposals for a campaign.   ECF will survey the entire parish about the proposed campaign, both by having ECF consultants personally interview individually a cross section of the parish, and by providing a detailed questionnaire to all parishioners.  Only after parishioners have expressed their views, either in interviews or by confidential responses to the survey, will the Vestry decide whether to proceed with a campaign, and what will be the objectives for it.

Andi Tillman of ECF will be with us at the Forum Hour on April 14 to explain and answer questions about the feasibility study process.

Newcomer's Brunch

Please join the Newcomer's Committee for a springtime brunch in Pierce Hall on April 14.  If you are a Newcomer to Trinity, this is a wonderful way to learn more about the community, ways to be involved in ministry and formation for you and your family, meet the leaders of various ministries,  get to know each other, and meet some long time Trinity members.  If you are an "old timer" this is a way to welcome Newcomers to Trinity, share your gifts of hospitality by providing a dish and /or your smiling face.  EVERYONE is welcome (families, please bring your children), but it is helpful to know who is coming so we can plan for food and seating.

Please RSVP by emailing Nancy Hagner hagnern@trinityprinceton.org or calling 609-924-2277 ext 307.

One Table Cafe

Seeking Committee Co-Chairs

to Coordinate Dinners

One Table Cafe
Join a team of dedicated, experienced and knowledgeable One Table Cafe committee members! Meg Hannington and Don Mann have run these highly successful dinners for two years. They are looking to retire and need two new co-chairs to step forward. Their plan is to have a chair-elect or co-chairs-elect in place to shadow them for the April and May dinners and then take over in September, when One Table Cafe resumes. What's important to understand is that the systems are in place, individual committee members are dedicated to specific functions within the system and what is required is one or two people to oversee it all.  If you might be interested in this role and want to better understand what it would involve, please let Meg (menoha8@aol.com) or Don (donald_mann@b-f.com) know!

Please Help Provide A Joyful Easter For Those In Need On The Jersey Shore By Pitching In! Restore Our Shore Is Matching Contributions Dollar-For-Dollar

To Reach our

$1,785 Goal!

Baskets Full of Easter Joy, run through the Pompton Reformed Church, is providing a community-building Easter egg hunt and dinner for approximately 500 people who were displaced due to Super Storm Sandy in the towns of Ortley Beach, Lavallette, Seaside and Toms River. Cost per person to attend is $7.14, so for a family of 4 people it is $28.56. Please consider helping a family of four celebrate Easter this year. The goal of this Crowdrise Fundraiser is to raise $1,785 to cover half of the entire event cost for this Easter Dinner. Restore Our Shore has generously paid for the first half.

Restore Our Shore is a 100% volunteer- run organization whose aim is quite simple: to Restore, Rebuild, and Recover the New Jersey Shore after massive Superstorm Sandy hit on October 29th. By acting as the link between generous donors and local charities, and spreading the word socially about their objective, Restore Our Shore is making impressive headway in helping to get the Jersey Shore back on its feet. Since Hurricane Sandy Restore Our Shore has raised $48K+ through grass-roots marketing and made bi-monthly distributions to worthy, local charities including Baskets Full of Easter Joy.

The Drive to Spring Rummage is On

October's Early Bird Holiday Sale capped a record year for Trinity Rummage, but the hard work of volunteers didn't end there. The devastating impact of Superstorm Sandy was felt by everyone, especially communities down the shore. As part of efforts big and small, near and far, Trinity took action. Your tremendous response in 2012 allowed Outreach to give more to programs that have played an integral part in Sandy recovery efforts. In addition, Outreach and Rummage helped process an overwhelming amount of donations over the past two months, including warm clothing and new necessities, that went to those most in need nearby and in shore communities. For Rummage, that process only just finished over the holidays. Now that those affected by Sandy are on the road to recovery, Rummage is asking for your help.

Donations that are especially needed include:

-- housewares, from dishes, cups and glasses, to pots, pans and cutlery

-- furniture one person can carry, such as a side table, chair(s) or small desk

-- antique items, including pieces of silver, fine dinner plates and fine cut glass

These and many more items, from clothing to books to electronics, are needed so Rummage can get back on its feet after helping others get back on theirs.

Donations are accepted during church office hours (9:00 - 4:30) and can be left on the bench outside Pierce Hall (NO donations are accepted during Holy Week). Please note that due to on-going security improvements, the Pierce Hall entrance is locked until 3:00pm. Access through the circle door is still available beginning at 9am. Donation receipts are available at the Reception Desk during church office hours. For more information, trinityprinceton.org/outreach or 609-924-2277 ext 351.

Thank you from the Rummage Committee

Hospital Visits

A knock on the door before quietly entering; an introduction; making a judgment call before starting a conversation. Although people everywhere are hurting, hospital patients especially require a compassionate sense of 'oneness', of spiritual natures communicating. Together with modern medical treatment, encouragement and calling forth God's grace brings the patient inner peace which aids in the healing process.

Patients request visits by clergy and hospital team members at the time of hospital registration by indicating their Trinity affiliation. If you or someone you know would like a visit, please contact us. Clergy receive updates after all visits.
