McShane's Nursery & Landscape Supply
June Newsletter

After months of waiting, summer is finally here, and BOY do we have some great deals down at the nursery right now!!! Look for email exclusive offers throughout this month's newsletter!

Summer is a unique time for gardeners here along the central coast. First, for all you "edible landscape" types, it is not too late to plant tomatoes and veggies. Consider heirloom tomato varieties well suited to cooler coastal temperatures. Second, consider succulents for areas of full sun and infrequent watering. Our selection has never been better!

There has not been a more dynamic time for small community based businesses like McShane's. We would not be here if it were not for you, and I want to sincerely thank you for keeping your business local. I wish you the best this June and look forward to seeing you soon.

Cane Berry Special!
Buy 2, Get 1 Free!

Blackberry, Raspberry, Boysenberry, or Olallieberry!

Who doesn't LOVE the taste of the summer sun in a ripe, juicy summer berry? With good preparation and proper care, most cane berries can be successfully grown in the Salinas Valley. Cane berries are very manageable if they are trellised and pruned correctly and if their roots are properly contained, which is a necessity with red raspberries.

Summer Blueberries

To grow successful blueberries in your garden, just remember: Never let Blueberries dry out and fertilize with an acid based fertilizer about once a month. Blueberries love full sun. The Salinas Valley is an excellent place to produce fruit in your very own backyard orchard. I've done it for years and have mastered it in my own backyard in South Salinas. The purpose of this article is to share some tips on how you can save money and eat well by producing your own fruit utilizing very little space.

The concept I raise was developed by a gentleman named Ed Laivo at Dave Wilson Nurseries. That is the idea of "Backyard Orchard Culture." This is the idea that backyard gardeners have much different objectives introducing fruit than those with hundreds of acres in the Central Valley. As I see it, there are three goals to producing delicious tree-ripe fruit. These are:
· Prolonged harvest of tree-ripe fruit in a small space
· As many varieties over as long as season as possible
· Trees that are easy to harvest from.

Pond Pumps Special

Newsletter Subscribers Only: 10% Off Pumps - See coupon at bottom of newsletter.

The pump is the heart of the pond.  It keeps everything moving and flowing.  No koi could survive in any pond without a pump circulating and aerating the water.  Some water gardens can survive without a pump but they have lots of plants and only one of two goldfish to control bugs.  Koi ponds, or any pond with fish, need a pump.

Read below to learn how to select the perfect pump.
Water Lotus Has Arrived!

Few species of pond plants can be compared to the striking foliage and blossoms of the Sacred Lotus, Nelumbo nucifera. The Lotus is native to tropical Asia where it is deeply rooted in cultural symbolism, history, religion and legend. Its large, round leaves and spectacular pink, cream or white flowers are produced by long, buouyant, fibrous roots called rhizomes. The foliage and flowers stand tall above the water's surface, while the rhizome runs in long strands through the mud or substrate. These plants and their hybrids are prized by pond and water garden enthusiasts and can be show-stopping if cultured and cared for properly.

Read below to learn how to care for your water lotus.
-The Perfect Pond Pump-
How to Select the Ideal Pump for Your Pond

First we need to decide the size of the koi pond. As a general rule you want to circulate to entire volume of the koi pond through the filter once per hour as a minimum. So a 2000 gallon koi pond needs at least a 2000 Gallon Per Hour (GPH) pump. You can go bigger if you like, but it's usually best not to go smaller. Also, consider other aspects of the koi pond, like the size of the filter and the UV. These are best chosen after you decide on the pump to make sure everything is the right size for the flow rate.

Ok, so you have decided on the size of the koi pond and you know the GPH you want for your pump, right? But wait, what about head pressure? Ah, yes factoring in head pressure is an important consideration. Head pressure is basically the height you want to pump the water. The higher you go, the greater the head and the less water the pump will move. Most pond pumps are designed for low head, this makes them far more energy efficient, but you need to factor in how much head the pump can handle and make sure you have the right GPH after head. If the pump is at pond level and the waterfall is 5 feet higher then the pond, then that's 5 feet of head. But other things can increase head pressure as well. Turns or angles in the pipe, pressurized filters and reducing the pipe size all contribute to head pressure. So keep all this in mind before you buy. Also, keep in mind, pond pumps push water far better then they pull water. So placing the pump close to water level or even lower then water level will greatly increase its flow.

Ok, so now you have factored in your head pressure and you know what size of pump to get. So now its time to decide on the type. There are two main types of pumps. Submersible and external. Submersible pumps are much easier to install and generally cost less to purchase. They are also available in very low GPH that you can't find in an external pump. This makes them a good choice for smaller ponds and DIY pond builders. However they also require more frequent cleaning and they tend to use a bit more watts when compared to external pumps. Now external pumps do require more plumbing and they can cost more to purchase, but for most ponds they are a better choice because of their lower maintenance and lower operating costs.

-Lotus Care-
Growing the Sacred Lotus in Your Pond

Lotus are fast growers under the right conditions. They are perennial in USDA zones 4-10 is wintered over correctly. They are sun-loving and should be placed in a location where they will recieve at least 6 hours of direct sun each day. While they will grow in some shadier locations, they need plenty of sun exposure to bloom. They also enjoy warm water temperatures; most of their growth takes place when water temps are at least 70 degrees. Lotus pots should be placed in a shallower area of the pond or raised up to the surface on a shelf so the plant remains warmer. Be sure the pot always at least 2-3 inches of water covering the roots. The plants should be sheltered from the wind to avoid damage.

In the spring, leaves appear first at the surface of the water then slowly emerge to stand above the water. Once the pland begins to show several leaves, begin fertilzing with root tabs, pressing the tabs into the substrate or soil but not directly against the root. As temperatures rise, the beautiful and often fragrant blossoms appear, standing above the leaves with varying numbers of soft petals that open in the morning and remain through the afternoon. The blossoms re-open for 2-3 days before the petals fall and the seed pod remains to harden. Fading, damaged, and yellowing leaves should be removed throughout the season by cutting the stems above the water. Seed pods may be pruned or left to grow as they are quite ornamental. Consistantly cooler temperatures send the plants into a dormant state. In ideal conditions, Lotus can quickly outgrow large pots or take over natural ponds if left unchecked.

Landscaping Design Tips
Reshape Your Backyard

Reshaping a sloped part of his backyard into two flat terraces was backbreaking but worth it for the easier access to his produce. Also remember to "JUST SAY NO" to hand watering and consider an auto drip irrigation system. It will save time, energy, and money!

Greet Guests With Flowers

Flowers always make a home seem more welcoming. Adorn your entrance with assorted annuals and perrenials to keep color year long.

If you have a small space between your house and the street, try putting a low fence in front. It gives the illusion that your house is farther from the street than it really is, and it also makes for a great space for planting flowers and vines.

Did You Know? - Fun Garden Facts
A Dutch Bulb Bargain!
Now THAT is OLD!
Onions: Nothing to Cry Over!
In the Netherlands, in 1634, a collector paid 1,000 pounds of cheese, four oxen, eight pigs, 12 sheep, a bed, and a suit of clothes for a single bulb of the Viceroy tulip.
The oldest living thing in existence is not a giant redwood, but a bristlecone pine in the White Mountains of California, dated to be aged 4,600 years old.
Onions contain a mild antibiotic that fights infections, soothes burns, tames bee stings and relieves the itch of athletes foot.
