McShane's Nursery & Landscape Supply
May Newsletter
|
May has finally arrived and with it a wealth of color and excitement in the garden. I could not be more thrilled by our selection of vegetables and herbs this year. For tomato fanatics, I cannot stop recommending the Japanese Black Trifele. It's an heirloom that produces abundantly on the coast.
For those planting, remember to use a high grade planting mix along with organic fertilizer. Organic products provide natural slow release nutrients for your garden. Now is the time garden needs fertilizer the most.
As summer approaches, I cannot help but remind folks about the benefits of hardscaping their yard. The addition of pavers, natural stone, boulders, bark and rock never need to be watered and don't die on you. Here at McShane's we have an expansive boulder selection. Once you select a boulder, you can borrow our "rock-jock" to move it into place or we can deliver and place it for you.
All of us here at McShane's appreciate the support the community has for a small and local operation like ours. We invite you to come visit our friendly staff and wish you the happiest of Springs.

Featured Product for May: Mini Bark
Using groundcover is a good gardening habit but not mandatory; the benefits, however, make it worth the effort. A really good job of mulching your garden usually offers these benefits:
- Inhibits weed germination and growth. (Weeds are not only unsightly, but they also steal resources from desirable garden plants!)
- Holds in soil moisture, protecting your plants from drying out quickly
- Moderates soil-temperature fluctuations (This benefit is especially valuable during that turbulent-weather period in spring when you don't want your plants to be stressed.)
- In cold-winter areas, protects plant roots from winter cold and helps prevent frost-heaving, in which plants are literally pushed out of the ground by the natural expansion and contraction of the soil as it cools off and heats up
- In hot-summer areas, helps keep plant roots cooler

Pavers for Hardscaping
Perfect for dry California conditions. Consider hardscaping with pavers. Save money on watering, and save time mowing yards. Its now official. Water rationing has reached a point of reality in some areas of the Greater Monterey Bay Area. As this is discussed more and more, folks are beginning to pay attention to the "hard-scaping" in their yards.

THE ESSENTIAL STEPS TO LANDSCAPE DESIGN
When it comes to designing outdoor spaces, take it one steppingstone at a time.
Start Up Front
If you're wondering where to start a landscape transformation, look no farther than your front yard. It's the first thing that you see driving up to your house, and you can wow guests before they even enter your home. Just remember that curb appeal is important, but no matter how pretty your landscape is, it needs to be functional.
 Hardscape First
Do all of your hardscaping projects before you set out any plants. Hardscaping can include a porch, sidewalk, driveway, parking areas, decks, fencing, patios and arbor. These projects usually involve construction, which can compact your soil or damage turf and plantings, so it's important to complete any heavy work before plantings begin.
Toil In the Soil When it is time to garden, amend your soil by adding organic matter such as finely shredded pine bark, peat moss, mushroom compost or leaf mold before setting out plants. Loose, fertile soil will encourage root growth on new plantings and allow them to become established quickly. Clearly define your turf and bed lines. First use a garden hose to lay out your bed lines then use orange spray paint to mark the lines.

Fossil Flower Power
|
Dandy Dandelion Fact
|
The Sacred Flower
|
The fossil of world's oldest known flower was discovered by scientists in 2002, in Northeast China. The flower belonging to the genus Archaefructus bloomed around 125 million years ago and resembled a water lily.
|
Dandelions look like weeds, but the flowers and leaves are a good source of vitamins A and C, iron, calcium and potassium. One cup of dandelion greens provides 7,000-13,000 I.U. of vitamin A.
|
Ancient Egyptians considered lotus a sacred flower and used them in burial rituals. Even though it blooms in swamps and wetlands, it can lie dormant for years during droughts and bloom again when water returns.
