We Now Carry
Artificial Turf

Artificial turf is a surface of synthetic fibers made to look like natural grass. It is most often used in arenas for sports that were originally or are normally played on grass. However, it is now being used on residential lawns and commercial applications as well. The main reason is maintenance-artificial turf stands up to heavy use, such as in sports, and requires no irrigation or trimming.

Gravel Your Yard - Save Money

Perfect for dry California conditions. Consider replacing your grass with gravel. Save money on watering, and save time mowing yards! Hard yet soft, these seemingly contradictory qualities are part of gravel's appeal. Durable enough to cover paths, terraces, and driveways, gravel conveys a softer mood than most other types of paving.

Landscaping Design Tips

Focus on Scale and Pacing

It's the trickiest principle in landscape design for beginners, but scale and pacing give your yard a pulled-together look. There will be variations in size, shape, and color, with tall plants against a building or in the back of a flowerbed, and paths that lead people through the space. You'll want to repeat some elements, whether it's a certain plant, a common color, or even a shape, so there's a sense of cohesion, but you also don't want it to be monotonous, so try adding an occasional element that's different from the landscape.

Patience is KEY

Remember: Patience is key to landscape design for beginners. If all of that bare space is too much to look at, and the kids and dogs are tracking in mud, rely on temporary solutions -- annuals, fast-growing groundcovers that you don't care about for the long term, even mulch -- to cover an area while you're figuring out what you want. Large landscaping features like trees can be hard to move; annuals can be taken out, and small perennials and shrubs can be transplanted if you realize they're in the wrong spot. But in the meantime, you have something out there.

Did You Know? - Fun Garden Facts
A Dutch Bulb Bargain!
Now THAT is OLD!
Onions: Nothing to Cry Over!
In the Netherlands, in 1634, a collector paid 1,000 pounds of cheese, four oxen, eight pigs, 12 sheep, a bed, and a suit of clothes for a single bulb of the Viceroy tulip.
The oldest living thing in existence is not a giant redwood, but a bristlecone pine in the White Mountains of California, dated to be aged 4,600 years old.
Onions contain a mild antibiotic that fights infections, soothes burns, tames bee stings and relieves the itch of athletes foot.

Garden to Table
Fire Roasted Tomato Bisque
This creamy fire-roasted tomato bisque soup calls for store-bought chicken broth and canned tomatoes but the aromatic vegetables give it homemade taste.

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 medium carrot, finely chopped
1 celery rib, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 cups chicken stock or canned low-sodium broth
Two 14 1/2-ounce cans diced fire-roasted tomatoes, drained
3 tablespoons tomato paste
2 teaspoons sugar
1/4 cup heavy cream
Salt and freshly ground white pepper
1/2 cup garlic or cheese croutons, for garnish (optional)

Directions:
In a medium saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of the butter. Add the chopped onion, carrot, celery and garlic, cover and cook over moderately high heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are just beginning to brown, about 5 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir over low heat for 1 minute, or until the flour is fully incorporated. Add the chicken stock, tomatoes, tomato paste and sugar and bring to a boil. Cover partially and cook the soup over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender, 15 minutes.
Transfer half of the soup to a blender and puree until smooth. Return the puree to the saucepan, add the heavy cream and cook until the soup is just heated through. Season the soup with salt and white pepper and swirl in the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Ladle the soup into bowls, garnish with croutons and serve.
