Ladybugs and Earthworms Have Arrived!

Ladybugs: $9.99 for hundreds of them.
Ladybugs, also called lady beetles or ladybird beetles, are a very beneficial group. They are natural enemies of many insects, especially aphids and other sap feeders. A single lady beetle may eat as many as 5,000 aphids in its lifetime. Ladybugs are voracious predators of harmful garden pests, mainly aphids, but they will also eat other small, soft-bodied insect larvae, insect eggs, and mites. Beneficial garden ladybugs for controlling pests in your garden are the most popular and widely used beneficial insects for commercial and home use.

Red Worms: $15.99 for hundreds of them.
Red worms improve water filtration rates and absorption rates helping the soil to drain better. Less runoff equals less watering and less erosion. The tunneling activity improves soil aeration, porosity, and permeability. Red worms also increase moisture absorption and moisture available to plants. Castings absorb water faster than soil, castings hold more water than equivalent amounts of soil.

Landscaping Design Tips

Study the sun and wind patterns.
You might want to place a patio on the west side of the house, but it will get lots of afternoon sun, which means dinnertime in August won't be relaxing -- just hot. And wind whistling around a corner will quickly extinguish a fire pit. Those are common mistakes in landscape design for beginners. Your design should take into account what the sun and wind do at different times of the day and year.

Work around a focal point.
Any good garden design has a focal point or series of focal points, and it's an easy principle to put in place in landscape design for beginners. That may be a sculpture or a stunning plant, a tree, or a series of shrubs. The point is to draw your eye and move it through the landscape.

March Gardening Tips
Water Wise Gardening Tips

Mulch your Garden!
A two- to four-inch layer of mulch also evens out temperature extremes, keep soil cool on hot days and warm on cool days. It also prevents soil from crusting, allowing better water penetration. Take a cue from nature and choose one of many organic mulches that add great visual texture to your landscape, such as shredded bark or chips, wood grindings, compost, aged sawdust or even low-growing ground cover. Inorganic mulches, such as gravel or rock, let the most water in and are frequently used with plants susceptible to crown rot.

Mycorrhizae your Garden!

The word mycorrhizae (pronounced My-cor-rye-zay) refers to a group of fungi which form a mutually beneficial relationship with many plants. These fungi grow either inside of a plant's roots or attach to the surface of a root. The fungi benefits from the plant's food and nutrients and in turn send their hyphae (like small roots) out into the surrounding soil to absorb nutrients and water.

So, mycorrhizae actually enhance a plant's ability to take up nutrients and water. Because of this, research has shown that the presence of mycorrhizae also help plants deal with drought and some diseases.

Strength in Onions
Cricket Forecast
Planting just 3 shade trees around your home can save between $100 and $250 per year in energy costs! 1
Best choices for aiding inside temperature are deciduous trees, which shade the house from the sun in summer, but allow the sun to penetrate during winter. Evergreens are a good choice for blocking cold northern winds.
Ancient Egyptian laborers ate onions to give them strength while building the pyramids!
The Allium genus is one of the largest plant genera in the world, with over 1,250 species. Onions are also one of the oldest vegetables used as a food source. Historical citations list onions as a leading ingredient for infertility, impotence, headache, hair loss, and in muscle liniments.
You can tell the temperature outside by listening to a cricket!
Count the number of chirps in 15 seconds, then add 37. The sum will be the approximation of temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. The male cricket does most of the singing by rubbing his wings together, usually to attract a female, but often to sound an alert when danger is near.
