McShane's Nursery January Newsletter

Happy New Year!

Growing your own flowers and food continues to be the rage and we're here to help you.  First, McShane's is proud to announce the arrival of our 2014 Rose Crop.  Heralded as a "Garden Center of Distinction" thanks to our rose selection and depth, we're ready to serve you.  Best of all, we've placed our winter rose stock at 25% off.  Buying your roses during winter means you get pick of the litter and mother nature will help to establish them. See our 2014 Rose List here.  We're happy to put our Gold Rush Planting Mix at "Buy 3, Get One Free" during January as well.  Gold Rush is outstanding for planting roses and fruit trees.

McShane's has also started to stock our 2014 Fruit Trees. We will be posting the list on our Facebook page soon, so be sure you "Like" us on Facebook
to stay updated!  Did we mention our fruit trees are at 25% off as well?  Winter is an exceptional time to plant as the ground is soft and trees are sleeping.

Finally, it is important to note that McShane's still continues to carry the highest quality soils in the region.  Custom blended to my specifications, our soil blends make great planting mixes, mulches and top dresses.

You can tell how excited I am for 2014.
We are proud to call ourselves your full service nursery and I hope you'll be by to see us soon.

LANDSCAPE SUPPLY
January Landscaping Tip: Apply Mulch & Fertilizer!
January is a great time to apply soil building mulch and organic fertilizer.  Steve recommends "Bumper Crop" and E.B. Stone Brand Organic Fertilizer to be applied around the base / under the drip lines of all plants in your yard.  This will give your landscape the necessary two or three months for things to "break down" and be absorbed into the soil.  Both brands are available now at McShane's Nursery.

Control Weeds

While there are many ways of controlling weeds, one of the most basic ones is to cover your flowerbed with a fabric specially made for landscapes, available at the garden center or in your local quarry. Lay rocks or tree bark over the fabric to prevent weeds from cropping up. Don't forget to first lay down your weed fabric! We offer large quantity discounts.

We are Expanding!

McShane's Landscape Department is expanding! We are adding several new bunkers to hold even more marterial for you to choose from. We are open to suggestions on what to carry and would love to hear from you. So far we are considering soil blends, lava rock, and more bark. Let us know what you think by contacting our Landscape Manager, Jose, at 455-1369.

We Sell/Rent Tools

From carts, to post drivers, to lawn rollers...  McShane's Nursery offers tool rentals to help you get started on your landscaping and design projects! We also have a large selection of tools for sale.

POND DEPARTMENT
Winter Pond Tips

Debris:  Are you keeping leaves, twigs and other debris out of your pond? It is important to remove leaves as some leaves can turn the water brown and can be toxic to fish.

koi fish Fish: As the water temperature drops your fish will become less active and go dormant. At water temperatures below 50 degrees fish become almost motionless, hibernating in the deepest and warmest part of the pond. Fish are the most attractive at this time of the year because the decrease in the water temperature intensifies their coloration.

REMEMBER: Feeding schedule for fish according to water temperature, use a pond thermometer to monitor the temperature:

60-65 degrees - twice a day

55-59 degrees - once a day

50-54 degrees - once a week

Plant Care:
When the water temperature of the pond drops, many lilies automatically go dormant. If any new leaves appear, they will be very small and will remain under the water, close to the soil. As the foliage browns, simply prune and lower the lily to the deepest part of the pond. Be sure to cut back all water plants if you have not already done so.

JANUARY GARDENING TIPS
Time to Weed-and-Feed Your Lawn!
NOW is the time to apply a "weed and feed" to give your lawn some necessary food and cut out any weeds.

McShane's Nursery carries some great products for you to try out. We also have weed and feed spreaders. Come in today to insure that your lawn is beautiful come this spring.

Start Your Seeds Indoors!
In low desert areas and other places where you're six to eight weeks away from the last average frost date, start seeds indoors for warm-season annuals, such as tomatoes, marigolds, peppers, cosmos, zucchini, impatiens, salvia, basil, and others. Otherwise, wait until all chance of freezing temperatures has passed and buy established seedlings at the garden center.

This time of year always makes people antsy for spring. It's not time to start hoeing in the garden, but it might be time to start those tomato, pepper, and/or basil plants. Here's a quick guide to starting plants indoors.

What you need to know about starting plants indoors:

  1. Only cold sensitive plants and slow growers need to be started indoors. One year I tried starting cucumbers indoors and oh my! They grew out of their containers before I even turned around... Quick growers and hearty plants don't need to be started indoors.
  2. You'll need to know when the last frost is expected in your area. Start plants indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
  3. Are you thinking about going on vacation? Seedlings need to stay medium moist. If you're planning on leaving them unattended for more than a few days, they'll probably die.
  4. You'll need a warm (at least 65° F) and well lit area for your seedlings.
  5. Before moving indoor plants to the garden (or a larger pot) outside, you need to harden them. Soft indoor plants will die without hardening. Hardening helps plants adjust to the elements gradually.
Step 1: Thoroughly mix water into your potting soil. The soil needs to be damp before you start planting.

Step 2: Scoop the damp soil into the egg carton until it is nice and level. Then using a finger, poke a small indent into the top of your soil (1/4 an inch or whatever your seed packet recommends).

Step 3: Place 3-4 seeds in each hole and cover them lightly with soil. Then place in a sunny spot and watch them grow.

Step 4: When they are an inch high or so, thin them to one plant per egg holder. When they are 2-4 inches high you'll want to transplant them to a bigger pot or to the garden.

Transplanting 1: When transplanting into a larger container, you'll need to select one with good drainage.

Transplanting 2: Then fill container with damp soil and create a holding space for the seedlings.

Transplanting 3: Break the seedlings out of their egg carton holders and pat them into their new homes. Look how happy they are!

Now wait for spring to arrive to place the container outside or transplant into ground!
