Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!!
With it means the celebration of the holidays, along with the need to get your garden and landscape prepared for the elements. If you have not already thought about bark, rock, or mulch to protect and feed your outdoor environment, come see us. November is also your last chance to cash in on some major fall plant savings. Through the 15th of the month, roses will still be 50% off. Here at McShane's, we are ready to help you since service is our specialty.
The most amazing & fulfilling part of the year is about to begin: Christmas at McShane's. We're expecting a fantastic crop of fresh Washington State Christmas Trees on November 23rd! We will begin sale of our trees on Monday, November 19th. Come early, tag & reserve your tree. We deliver too. Keep in mind that we have "nursery quality" poinsettias, wreaths and garland. All available November 23rd. Our delivery service of Christmas Trees is based on $5 / foot of tree (Within 30 miles, extra fees apply for farther distances).
Did we mention our fantastic Christmas Light Display? We have been working tirelessly since July to assemble 55,000 lights, 1.2 miles of extension cords and 14 computers that will put on a "dancing" / festive Christmas Light Show that will blow your mind. As in years past, the show is dedicated to our friends at the Salvation Army and the Monterey County Food Bank. McShane's will be collecting toys, food & cash donations for those less fortunate. We "dedicate" the light show on Sunday, November 24th at 5:00PM. I hope you can join us!
Here's to a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving this month. As difficult as the economy has been, we're still here and as thankful as ever for your continued support for small independent businesses, like McShane's.

November Landscaping Tip:
Mow, Fertilize, Aerate!
In the fall, a little groundwork is essential to keeping your yard water-efficient and looking great:
Lower your mower's height to 1½ inches to stimulate new crown growth. Fertilize in November with a balanced mix of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Fertilizer not only improves turf quality, root growth and color-it also builds cold resistance into your grass. Fertilize once more in December to get your landscape through winter with style. McShane's carries Dr. Earth fertilizer. We also offer large quantity discounts. Call (831) 455-1369 and ask for Jose for more information!!!
....and of course, Mulch!
Mulch is the little-noticed workhorse of many a smart gardener's landscape. Mulch is a protective covering-organic or inorganic-we place in a wide circle around plants to prevent moisture evaporation, root freezing and weed growth. Using mulch can reduce evaporation by as much as 30 percent. McShane's has you covered with Groundcover. Stop by to view our wide selection today!

Concrete Accelerator
McShane's offers concrete accelerators and decelerators for your next project. A Concrete Accelerator is an admixture for the use in concrete, mortar, rendering or screeds. The addition of Concrete Accelerator speeds the setting time and thus cure time starts earlier. This allows concrete to be placed in winter without the worry of frost damage.

Winter Pond Care - What You Need To Know!
Debris: Keep leaves, twigs and other debris out of your pond. Use a mesh pond netting to cover you pond. If a net is not used it is important to remove leaves as some leaves can turn the water brown and can be toxic to fish.
Fish: As the water temperature drops your fish will become less active. At water temperatures below 50o fish become almost motionless, hibernating in the deepest and warmest part of the pond. Fish are the most attractive at this time of the year because the decrease in the water temperature intensifies their coloration.
Feeding schedule for fish according to water temperature, use a pond thermometer to monitor the temperature:
60-65 degrees - twice a day
55-59 degrees - once a day
50-54 degrees - once a week
Lily Care: Once winter approaches and the water temperature of the pond drops, the hardy lilies automatically go dormant. If any new leaves appear, they will be very small and will remain under the water, close to the soil. As the foliage browns, simply prune and lower the lily to the deepest part of the pond.If a sufficient depth of water can be maintained so that freezing does not occur at the root level, the hardy lily does not need to be removed from the pond.
Any Other Questions? Call the McShane's Pond Doctor!!!
Our trained staff is ready to come to your home or business and check on your pond. Our in house "Pond Doctor" will be able to give recommendations on how to best get your pond or water feature in tip-top shape again. Essential November Gardening Tips
Less Water:
Adjust your watering schedule for cooler weather, using less water. -As the weather cools and the sun moves lower in the sky, reset your irrigation timer to water less frequently. However, don't change the number of minutes the system waters each time. In many areas, trees and shrubs will need watering only every week to week and a half, and citrus trees just once a month.
Planting Trees and Shrubs: Continue planting perennials, groundcovers, herbs, roses, and trees and shrubs. Also plant native wildflowers such as California poppies.
-There's also time to plant beds with cool-season flowers, such as pansies, calendula, candytuft, foxgloves, snapdragons, stock, sweet peas, and sweet alyssum. -Complete planting of cool-season veggies, such as broccoli, carrots, cauliflowers, lettuces and greens, potatoes, radishes, and peas. -Plant the cool-season bulbs you refrigerated in October as long as they've had 6-8 weeks chilling time. Or buy pre-chilled bulbs at the garden center.
Smart Pruning: Prune deciduous fruit trees. After pruning, spray with dormant oil to prevent fungal diseases and pest problems.
-Cut ornamental grasses back to the ground once they show signs of new growth.
Keep in mind: McShane's is fully stocked with seeds, seedlings and all the fixings for fabulous November upkeep!

"DID YOU KNOW?" - Fun Garden Facts
|
|
When you buy produce in little baskets (like berries, cherry tomatoes, etc.), save the baskets & use them for organizing around the house or garden, or even for seed starting planters.
|
|
A Cheesy Idea
Save that old empty parmesan cheese shaker - and fill it with a mixture of fine seeds and sand. Then simply shake to spread the seeds as you're planting.
|
|
|
Onions, apples and potatoes all have the same taste. The difference in flavor is caused by their smell. Pinch your nose and try it - they will all taste sweet

|
|
When your hands are badly stained from gardening, add a teaspoon of sugar to the soapy water the wash them.
