Greetings!
Happy Fall!
Fall is officially in full swing here along the Central Coast of California.
October marks the greatest transition in our local environment. Mornings become crisp and local vegetable growers enjoy their last harvest before moving to the desert for winter vegetable production.
This means three things for the garden:
1.) Fall Feeding: Fall is without question the smartest time to feed your landscape with a high quality organic fertilizer like the "Dr. Earth" label. Feeding in the fall ensures root growth and an important investment in your plants as they prepare for spring flowers and fruit. Further, organic fertilizers are naturally slow to become plant available. By applying in the fall, nutrients become available when the plants need them most.
2.) Fall Specials: Every nursery I know offers a whole lot of fall specials that you cannot find any other time of year. Without question, Fall is the best time to find deals on landscape barks and flagstones. It is also the ideal time of year to save on roses and fruit trees. McShane's is no exception. Be sure to check out our "October Sales" as they come and go quickly. We have great deals on Roses, Deciduous Fruits, and a number of plants! See our sales, which are included in this newsletter.
3.) Fall Planting: The smartest university horticulturalist will tell you that fall is the ideal time to plant. This is not just because you'll save money, it is because it will allow your plants the benefit of mother nature's rain to help get your plants established. Further, you can often find more mature plants. This is especially important for roses and fruit trees. Oh, and did we mention the fantastic fall weather that makes for an enjoyable gardening experience?
I hope your fall is as enjoyable as ours is. We appreciate you depending on a small independent garden center like McShane's and look forward to seeing you soon.

October: The Best Time To Mulch!
Fall mulching has many benefits! For one, it helps to keep the sticky mud off the soles of your shoes when you come back inside. Besides that, the effect mulching has on soil temperatures is probably one of the most often overlooked benefits. Many of us are more concerned with above ground temperatures and don't spend much time pondering what's happening underground. Simply stated: Mulch is insulation. It keeps the soil around your plants' roots cooler on warm days and warmer on cold nights. This is especially important during rapid temperature shifts.
We have bark, mulch, gravel, etc. Be sure to ask about our large quantity discount! For more information call one of our garden experts today: (831)455-1876

Benefits of Gravel
Depending on the source of the rock, pea gravel can include a variety of colors, and you do not need to replace it annually. Because it is heavy, normal rain showers won't wash it out of your beds. Gravel and other inorganic mulches work well if water tends to stand in an area, and it is especially effective for plants that prefer drier conditions, like cacti. Another benefit of inorganic mulches is that they are less prone to molds, so allergy sufferers may find them a better choice.

Keep Down The Algae in Your Pond!
Try These 5 Easy Tips to Help Keep the Algae Out!
1. Feed your fish only as much food as can be eaten within about five minutes. Food not eaten will decay and contribute to algae growth.
2. Use water plants to help keep sunlight off of the waters surface. Water Hyacinth, Water Lilies, and Lotus are all good choices.
3. Introduce aquatic pond snails to your pond. Pond snails dine on the algae in your pond.
4. Add tadpoles to your pond. Tadpoles not only eat algae but also eat mosquito and other insect larvae.
5. Clean the filters in your filtration system regularly. Clogged filters can dill beneficial bacteria and allow algae to flourish.

Include "Structure" in Your Garden
Our In-House Designers Can Help
A great garden includes more than just plants. Incorporate a structure, such as an arbor or pergola, a fence, or a stone retaining wall. Choose a material that complements your garden style and fits within your budget.
Test Garden Tip: Stone is a common choice because it's maintenance-free and fits well with a wide variety of landscaping styles. Select stone native to your area for a more natural look. Or add extra appeal by including various types of stones.

Essential October Tips - What To Plant?
Time to Plant Spring Bulbs:
Plant daffodils, hyacinth, tulips and crocus bulbs. Planting now should result in flowers in spring. Make sure your soil's clay content doesn't make the soil too dense.
Till soil conditioner into the top 12 inches of soil. This should help break up the clay and make the soil more conducive for the bulbs to grow.
Plant Vegetables For Winter and Early Spring Harvest: Many vegetables do well when the weather cools. Plant these vegetables now: broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, potatoes, radishes and peas.
Herb's Fall Season: Plenty of herbs do well when planted in fall. They include garlic, oregano, parsley, rosemary, chives, cilantro, dill, fennel and thyme. Unless you have been clipping back the flowers on your basil plants, the leaves will have lost their soft texture by now. Pick and dry these leaves and use them for cooking.
Keep in mind: McShane's is fully stocked with seeds, seedlings and all the fixings for an awesome Fall and Winter Veggie & Herb Garden!
