"Autumn is a second spring where every leaf is a flower."  - Albert Camus
Greetings!

Fall is quickly approaching and with it some major changes in our landscapes.  Plants know available daylight is changing and as a result, they are beginning to shift their energy into storing food and hunkering down for the coming cool months.  As such, root growth in our plants increases several fold.  Now is the perfect time to apply fertilizer.  Fall feeding has been proven to be almost as important as spring.  For this reason, I recommend a fantastic organic slow release product called "Dynamite."  A little amount goes a long way.  I'd recommend it applied across all your favorites.

Now is also an important time to consider groundcover and weed control for your garden.  We have a multitude of barks and gravels for you to choose from and our experts are waiting to help you calculate just how much you need and even deliver it to your doorstep!  Did I mention we can spread bark as well as deliver it?  Just inquire with our dispatch office.

I absolutely love living on the Central Coast of California.  This fall I invite you to discover the wonder of what sort of color, edible landscaping, or outdoor living you can add to your home.  Time spent in the yard is time well spent.

WHAT'S NEW AT MCSHANE'S...
Chrysanthemums are Here!

The official flower of the City of Salinas has finally arrived at McShane's! This famous fall flower is now ready to add some color to your garden.

The main reason the "mum" was chosen as the official city flower was due to its mention in John Steinbeck's writings. That said, a number of gardeners nominated the chrysanthemum as a colorful, strong and symbolic flower.

Chrysanthemum flowers bloom in various forms, and can be daisy-like, decorative, pompoms, or button like. Chrysanthemums also come in a wide variety of sizes and colors too. At one point in time, the Salinas Valley had dozens of growers as the mum was one of the most popular cut flowers on the market.

3 1/2 cups peeled, chopped cooking apples
1 (16-ounce) jar applesauce

GARDENING TIPS
Time to "Pinch and Trim"

One important job in the fall is tending to your plants. Here is what you need to know to get started on the grooming:

1. Deadheading: Remove faded and spent flowers to improve the plants appearance. It also prevents self-sowing seeds.

2. Pinching: Remove the young tips of the plant just above the first set of leaves - This will produce more flowers!

3. Disbudding: Remove a plants flower buds - If you remove side buds, the main bud will produce one large flower. If you remove the main bud, the side shoot will produce many small flowers.

How To: 8 Tips for Fall Planting

DID YOU KNOW?
Fruit or Pinecone?

The word pineapple comes from European explorers who thought the fruit combined the look of a pinecone with flesh like that of an apple. Pineapples are the only edible members of the bromeliad family.

It's all Greek

Iris means "rainbow" in Greek, and Iris was goddess of the rainbow in Greek mythology. Wormwood (Artemisia) was named after the goddess Artemis, milkweed (Asclepias) after the god Asclepius, and Hebe after the Greek goddess Hebe.
A Non-Nutty Fact

Did you know that Peanuts are not nuts at all, but actually legumes related to beans and lentils. Peanuts have more protein, niacin, folate, and phytosterols than any nut.
Veggie or Fruit?

From a botanical standpoint, avocados and pumpkins are fruits, not vegetables, because they bear the plants' seeds. Rhubarb, on the other hand, is a vegetable.
