Greetings Gardeners and Landscapers,
After months of waiting, summer is finally here! Summer is a unique time for gardeners here along the central coast. First, for all you "edible landscape" types, it is not too late to plant tomatoes and veggies. Consider heirloom tomato varieties well suited to cooler coastal temperatures. Some of my favorite varieties are Sweet 100, Siberian, Glacier and Stupice. Second, consider succulents for areas of full sun and infrequent watering. Our selection has never been better!
I also remind folks to pepper their veggies and flowers with organic fertilizer. Now is the time to do it. Organic fertilizer is naturally slow release and will provide your garden the kick it needs as things swing into full summer gear. I remind folks to stay on top of weeds or they will stay on top of you as well.
We recently enjoyed a fantastic class on "Landscape Design" here at the nursery. The class spoke of the importance to consider barks, rock and even artificial turf for parts of your landscape. It will curb your water bill and keep your yard weed free. I want to remind folks that our classes occur every Saturday and are free to the public.
Don't forget that McShane's carries local and organic fresh fruits and vegetables. Next time you are in the store, check out "Fresh From D'Vine" retail produce market and pick up some ripe, juicy, strawberries for your summer bbq!

To grow successful blueberries in your garden, just remember: Never let Blueberries dry out and fertilize with an acid based fertilizer about once a month. Blueberries love full sun. Plant several varieties for better pollination and a larger yield per plant. Don't forget to consider bird repellent and netting to protect your summer fruit.

STEVE McSHANE APPOINTED TO CALIFORONIA STATE NURSERY ADVISORY BOARD
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - Salinas Nuseryman, Steve McShane, has been appointed to the California Nursery Advisory Board by California State Secretary of Agriculture Karen Ross.
The California Nursery Advisory Board consists of 12 appointed growers, shippers and retailers in the nursery industry statewide. The board aids in policy development concerning the sale, production and movement of nursery stock in California. The term of the appointment is four years.
"Nursery is one of Monterey County's top commodities. I will be a vocal advocate for both the Central Coast and retailers engaged in an important California crop," shared McShane. "These are tough times for the industry and I'm excited to help keep an important green industry growing," continued McShane.
Steve McShane is owner and general manager of McShane's Nursery & Landscape Supply in Salinas. He serves on the Salinas City Council and as a Senator for the American Nursery & Landscape Association in Washington D.C.
