A Note From Steve McShane
April has finally arrived. This is the most exciting month of the year for gardeners and landscapers. The energy of your outdoor environment is almost magnetic. You'll find that McShane's has never had more beautiful inventory than now.
I continue to be most excited about our incredible inventory of roses and fruit trees. Nobody within an hours drive can hold a candle to our breadth and depth. We've recently brought in seven pallets of Malaysian Pottery as well. We buy direct, so our pricing is competitive and the quality unmatched.
I want to highlight our newly renovated front pond as well. It is now featured as a true "demonstration" pond used for education & relaxation. The energy behind the pond echoes our continued effort to be Monterey Bay's # 1 Pond Supply Destination.
Spring is a great time to consider hardscaping as well. Our cool nights lend our region to additions such as fire pits and outdoor pizza ovens.

- Tend flowering shrubs. After azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons finish blooming, remove spent blooms, taking care not to damage the new growth just beneath them. Feed the plants with a fertilizer especially developed for acid lovers. Come talk to our staff to find out what products are best for your plants.
- Start Vegetables. Early in the month, sow in the garden seeds of cool-season veggies such as carrots, chard, and spinach. Late in the month, sow seeds of warm-season crops such as beans, corn, and squash; set out seedlings of eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes. McShane's has a large variety of seeds, along with many different vegetable seedlings.

Mycorrhizae is a great supplement to any garden or landscape.
Mycorrhizae is a beneficial fungus that helps to accelerate growth by propagating, attaching itself to the roots, and collecting nutrients and water through the roots. The root systems can become 2 to 3 times more effective with the use of mycorrhizae. See our video on Mycorrhizae below.

Congratulations to last month's winner! They got the right answer of: "The inside of a cucumber on the vine measures as much as 20 degrees cooler than the outside air on a warm day. To last month's question of: Why is the term: "Cool as a cucumber" accurate?
This month's question is: Before modern materials were developed, what was used in the manufacturing of life jackets, providing buoyancy?
The rules of the game are simple.
We ask one trivia question a month. Please send all answers to sp@mcshanesnursery.com, with your full name. Prize: A $10 McShane's Gift Certificate. One winner per newsletter. The first 10 correct answers each newsletter will be put into a drawing to determine the monthly winner. Winner must bring an ID to the nursery to claim the prize. Prize must be picked up in person within 2 weeks. Employees are not eligible for this contest.
Have fun and good luck!
