Shamrock Plant with Pink Flowers 2

A Note From Steve McShane

Spring Has Sprung !!!

There is no question that life is never more apparent than in the spring.  Plants push new growth and with it comes an indescribable energy that gardeners and landscapers know well.  Here at McShane's we celebrate this energy and stand well prepared to help you fuel its success.

This March, we will continue our "rose sale" with incredible winter pricing.  We also feature our largest and best selection of the year when it comes to fruit trees.  If you're looking to get an early start on your veggies, we're ready for you.  This week we receive our first delivery of spring tomatoes.  Customers can also expect early season basil, peppers, squash and more.  I'd be the first to recommend getting your ground prepared with organic fertilizer and some fantastic organic compost.  See our video on Fertilizers, below.
Organic versus Conventional Fertilizer: What Are The Differences?

When it comes to landscape supply, it is not too late to try and address weeds with some of our mulches, barks and groundcovers.  During March, customers can take advantage of our "Gorilla Hair" Shredded Cedar Sale at $34.99 a yard.  Have you been putting off the purchase of pavers for your driveway or patio?  Be sure to ask about our "Paver Seconds" where customers have the opportunity to install pavers for a fraction of the cost.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that now is the time to get your pond and water garden ready for spring.  We will be bringing in some beautiful water plants and have begun to re-stock our fish supply.  See our resident pond experts, Jeramey and Jose.

Here's to a successful spring!  We appreciate your choosing to shop local and look forward to offering you outstanding service and great advice.

  • Attract good bugs: To keep insect pests under control in your vegetable garden, lure in their natural enemies -- hoverflies, lacewings, ladybugs, and parasitic wasps -- by planting the nectar plants they love, such as aster, chamomile, coreopsis, cosmos, feverfew, marigold, scabiosa, and yarrow.
  • Grow fruit trees: Gardeners in Sunset climate zones 8-9 and 12-24 can all grow some kind of citrus and fruit trees, and March is the ideal time to plant. Check out our 2013 Fruit Tree List
  • Look at our 2013 Rose List and Fruit Tree List to start planning your garden and landscape. These lists are available in the right column in our Quick Links, as well as on the homepage of our website:

Notes from Our Departments
Nursery Department:
This week we are getting in our first shipment of spring vegetables.  You will find tomatoes, basil, peppers, squash and more.  Stop by and ask our knowledgeable staff what products you'll need to get your veggies off to a great start!

Our rose list is available at this link: 2013 Rose List  or on our website McShane's Nursery Webpage on our homepage under Garden Tips.  Our 2013 roses are in and it's a perfect time to plant. Come out early for the best selection!  This month, roses are priced at $21.99.  Be sure to get them off to a great start by using Gold Rush Planting Mix as you plant.  Check out our other sale items in the March Sales area in the right column.

Check out our 2013 Fruit Tree List.  All of our trees are potted and out for sale.  We ordered a great selection of fruits and berries.  Again, be sure to come early to get the best selection.

Landscape Supply:

Come in and talk to Jose or John about the products that we carry in our landscape supply department.  Ask us about landscape materials and weed control. March is a great time to add mulch to your landscape.  It not only controls weeds, but also helps retain moisture, and adds a finished look to your landscape.  Our Gorilla Hair Cedar Mulch is on sale this month.  Check out our video on Groundcovers or call us at 831-455-1369.  Check out our sales and specials in the March Sales in the right column.

Concrete Trailers are convenient to use for your small and large home projects!  McShane's is the only location in the county that rents trailers.  4 sack, yard concrete is only $119.99.  We have different sack types, along with different yards available. Call us to find out more.  Click here for Information on Laying & Finishing Concrete

Pond Department:

Spring is here and shortly you will be enjoying the outdoors and your pond again. At the top of your to-do list needs to be "Preparing Your Pond for Spring". Check out our workshop this weekend:  Spring Pond Workshop, Saturday, March 9th at 1:30PM.  Contractor and pond specialist, Michael Heller, will be presenting the workshop that will cover spring maintenance, DIY projects, and creation of a new pond.

Congratulations to last month's winner! They got the right answer of "Herb (actually, the world's largest herb)" to last month's question of: Is the Banana considered a Fruit, Vegetable or Herb?

This month's question is: Why is the term:  "Cool as a Cucumber" accurate?

The rules of the game are simple.

We ask one trivia question a month. Please send all answers to sp@mcshanesnursery.com, with your full name. Prize: A $10 McShane's Gift Certificate. One winner per newsletter.  The first 10 correct answers each newsletter will be put into a drawing to determine the monthly winner. Winner must bring an ID to the nursery to claim the prize. Prize must be picked up in person within 2 weeks. Employees are not eligible for this contest.

Have fun and good luck!
