A Note From Steve McShane Happy February -
I'm reminded daily how blessed we are to live in such an amazing place like the Central Coast of California. As we continue through winter, now, more than ever, we have plenty to do in the garden. Three things I'd stress:
Roses & Fruit Trees: Now is the time to prune, spray and fertilize. It is not too late to catch one of our free seminars. The best spray is a copper concentrate spray diluted to a solution of 2 ounces per gallon. Check out our videos on Spraying and Pruning Fruit Trees The absolute best fertilizer is Dr. Earth. I always recommend folks apply it along with a nice top dress of Gold Rush Planting Mix. Your trees will be ready to put out in the spring. I also want to remind folks about our Fruit Tree Grafting Workshop with my great friend, Joe Sabol. It is scheduled for Saturday, February 23rd at 1:30PM and requires an RSVP. The cost is only $5 and everyone goes home with their own grafted fruit tree!!!
Mulching, Bark Replenishment & Weed Control: Our landscape supply is ready to help you cover up in an effort to keep your landscapes beautiful and free of weeds. I recommend small bark, gorilla hair & even gravels. How To Chose a Groundcover Video Always use weed fabric. As soil is the key to our happy gardens, I recommend folks bring in a few yards of our 50/50 mix or high grade organic compost for top dressing around important shrubs, roses and fruit trees. As I tell people all the time, "Feed your soil and your soil will feed your plants."
Landscape Coaching & Design: Finally, I want to drive home the importance of having a plan for your garden or landscape. We have a team of trusted designers that can be called upon for consulting or full-fledged designs which can be bid out to landscape contractors. During January and February, our regular rate of $125 is discounted to $100.00. We invite you to explore this valuable service. Follow this link to our Design Page and Survey.
Again and again, I welcome you to celebrate the wonderful world of gardening and landscaping. It is still America's favorite hobby and will bring more joy to your life than you could ever imagine.

February is a great time to re-evaluate your lawn. Now is the time to put down crabgrass control. McShane's carries many different organic and non-organic fertilizers and controls. Dr. Earth is our favorite line of organic products. They produce over 11 different types of fertilizers, as well as a number of controls and killers. We even carry a number of different products to keep the moles and other rodents out of your yard. Stop by and ask our knowledgeable staff what products are right for your lawn.
Our rose list is available at this link: 2013 Rose List or on our website McShane's Nursery Webpage on our homepage under Garden Tips. Our 2013 roses are in and it's a perfect time to plant. Come out early for the best selection! Be sure to get them off to a great start by using Gold Rush Planting Mix as you plant. Check out our 2013 Fruit Tree List. All of our trees are potted and out for sale. We ordered a great selection of fruits and berries. Again, be sure to come early to get the best selection. Landscape Supply: Come in and talk to Jose or John about the products that we carry in our landscape supply department. Ask us about landscape materials and weed control. Now is a great time to work with both. February is a great time to add mulch to your landscape. It not only controls weeds, but also helps retain moisture that we will be getting this month. Check out our video on Groundcovers or call us at 831-455-1369. We also have a great video on How to Enhance Your Soil Concrete Trailers are convenient to use for your small and large home projects! McShane's is the only location in the county that rents trailers. 4 sack, yard concrete is only $119.99. We have different sack types, along with different yards available. Call us to find out more. Click here for Information on Laying & Finishing Concrete Pond Department: Spring is approaching and shortly you will be enjoying the outdoors and your pond again. At the top of your to-do list needs to be "Preparing Your Pond for Spring". Mother Nature has a fantastic way of preparing her natural bodies of water for each new season by flooding waterways with fresh rains and melting snow, pushing old water out and refreshing it with new. In your pond, this service needs to be provided by you on a yearly basis to help maintain its balance. This means you've got to get in there, drain and refill, remove any heavy debris that may have accumulated during fall and while you're at it, clean the biological waterfall filter, and replace the light bulbs as needed in your underwater lighting systems. All of this needs to be done while ensuring the safety of your fish and other pond inhabitants. You may also need to thin out your aquatic plants if they were taking over your pond last year. However, remember that most of your plants are still dormant. Wait until spring to get rid of rough looking plants; often a plant will look great again in spring as the temperatures warm up. Congratulations to last month's winner! They got the right answer of "Tulip Bulbs" to last month's question of: What spring bulb was so highly valued that people didn't plant their bulbs, in fear that they would be stolen?
This month's question is: Is the Banana considered a Fruit, Vegetable or Herb?
The rules of the game are simple.
We ask one trivia question a month. Please send all answers to sp@mcshanesnursery.com, with your full name. Prize: A $10 McShane's Gift Certificate. One winner per newsletter. The first 10 correct answers each newsletter will be put into a drawing to determine the monthly winner. Winner must bring an ID to the nursery to claim the prize.
