A Note From Steve McShane

Winter is coming!  With it means the celebration of the holidays, along with the need to get your garden and landscape prepared for the elements.  If you have not already thought about bark, rock or mulch to protect and feed your outdoor environment, come see us.  November is also your last chance to cash in on some major fall plant savings.  Through the 15th of the month, roses will still be 50% off.  Here at McShane's, we are ready to help you since service is our specialty.

The most amazing & fulfilling part of the year is about to begin:  Christmas at McShane's.  We're expecting a fantastic crop of fresh Washington State Christmas Trees November 17 and 18.  We will begin sale of our trees on Monday, November 19th.  Come early, tag & reserve your tree.  We deliver too.  Keep in mind that we have "nursery quality" poinsettias, wreaths and garland.  All available November 19th.  Our delivery service of Christmas Trees is based on $5 / foot of tree (Within 30 miles, extra fees apply for farther distances).

Did we mention our fantastic Christmas Light Display?  We have been working tirelessly since July to assemble 55,000 lights, 1.2 miles of extension cords and 14 computers that will put on a "dancing" / festive Christmas Light Show that will blow your mind.  Video Link to Christmas Lights Display  As in year's past, the show is dedicated to our friends at the Salvation Army and the Monterey County Food Bank.  McShane's will be collecting toys, food & cash donations for those less fortunate.  We "dedicate" the light show on Sunday, November 18th at 5:30PM.  I hope you can join us!

Here's to a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving this month.  As difficult as the economy has been, we're still here and as thankful as ever for your continued support for small independent businesses, like McShane's.

Steve

  •  Get cool-season annuals now! They need to be established before the winter weather sets in, get them in the ground before the end of the month. Plant six packs of pansies, primroses, snapdragons, or violas.
  • Do fruit tree maintenance this month by picking off all the old fruit and picking up the leaves that have fallen or any other debris.
  • Remember to protect frost sensitive plants.

Pond Department:

Here are a few winter pond tips!

Think about switching to a Cold Temperature Beneficial Bacteria once your pond stays below 60 degrees for the winter. This bacteria will eat away at sludge on the bottom of your pond during the winter and help keep your pond crystal clear and healthy.

Reduce your fish feeding regimen.  As your water temperature drops below 65 degrees the metabolism of your fish slows down. Start feeding your fish just a couple of times a week. You can also purchase Cold Temperature Fish Food which is specially formulated for the spring & fall.  Stop feeding your fish completely when water temperatures fall below 50 degrees. Make sure you have a pond thermometer!

Trim your perennial aquatic plants that begin going dormant as the weather cools. Your aquatic plants aren't dying, but they may turn yellow or brown as they go dormant. You should trim back the yellowing leaves to prevent the fall out debris from building in the bottom of your pond. This simple trick will make your fish pond cleaning responsibilities easy.

If you put these tips to use, you will extend your enjoyment of your water feature into the Holiday Season!

Talk to Pond Manager, Jeramey McCaffery about your pond needs and potential designs.

Landscape Design Department:
Fall is a great time to re-evaluate your landscape.  Is it meeting your needs?  Does it appeal to you more in some seasons than others? Now is a great time to have someone come out and talk to you about possible changes in  your landscape.  Have it ready to go for next spring's enjoyment.

Congratulations to last month's winner! They got the right answer of "Chuko Liang, a Chinese general, in AD 231 for use by his troops in moving supplies through mucky soil" to last month's question of:  Who invented the wheelbarrow and when?

This month's question is:  Early archeologists found evidence of which vegetable in cave dwellings dating back to 9750 BC?

The rules of the game are simple.

We ask one trivia question a month. Please send all answers to sp@mcshanesnursery.com, with your full name. Prize: A $10 McShane's Gift Certificate. One winner per newsletter.  The first 10 correct answers each newsletter will be put into a drawing to determine the monthly winner. Winner must bring an ID to the nursery to claim the prize. Prize must be picked up in person within 2 weeks. Employees are not eligible for this contest.
