Headmaster's Greeting |
A-HA MOMENTS
We talk about the "light going on" or the "a-ha moment." Such idioms express the point at which a person comes to understand something of which he was previously unaware. Such moments among students are what make teaching both exciting and satisfying. But what goes into these moments? As any teacher will tell you, a good deal of preliminary instruction and mental construction invariably precede the moment of synthesis and understanding. In fact, moments like these are impossible without a considerable amount of foundational work.
The foundational work necessary for a person to begin to see connections starts with the accumulation of relevant facts. This kind of knowledge base must be firmly fixed in the mind so that it is immediately available to the person. Just knowing where or how to find the information will not help the student achieve the desired synthesis; he must know it by heart, carry it in his head, and be able to draw on it at will. Hence the need for memorization and repetition at the grammar stage of learning.
Two books published in the early 1900's will illustrate my point. In 1908 Dr. Frank Thompson published a remarkable reference Bible known as the
Thompson Chain Reference Bible. Around the same time Orville Nave published what we know today as
Nave's Topical Bible. For over a century, these books have proven to be valuable tools for Bible study. What makes them so special is that these men were able to do something that computers are still unable to do today. Their thorough knowledge of the Bible enabled them to discern insights into the word of God.
The point is this: These men could do what computers cannot because they had a solid knowledge base from which they could draw connections and conclusions. Classical education prepares students for their own a-ha moments by first equipping them with a solid knowledge base from which they can draw. Without that knowledge base, such synthesis would not be possible, but with it the web of understanding can and will grow throughout life.

Students Excel at PSIA |
Our MLS Students performed very well at the March 2nd PSIA event in Bryan, Texas. Twenty-eight MLS students attended the event, and we brought home a total of twenty-four awards!
Our students competed against 13 other schools and MLS placed 3rd overall in the elementary division, placing above the host school, Brazos Christian, and Catholic and Episcopal schools.
The top 6 in each event received recognition, with first place (and in most cases 2nd place) advancing to State. In some events, 2nd and 3rd place are Alternates to State.
The following students advanced to the state competition at TCU May 4:
- 5th grader Aislinn Bohot -1st in Listening Skills (Aislinn also placed 3rd in Dictionary Skills, and 6th in Spelling)
- 4th grader Meera Krishnan - 1st in Spelling, 2nd in Maps, Charts, Graphs, and 2nd in Math
- 3rd grader Peter Dragomirov - 1st in Spelling (Peter went to State last year in this category)
- 3rd grader Drew Rebber - 1st in Storytelling (Drew also placed 5th in Ready Writing)
