Headmaster's Greeting

Lent at MLS

Ash Wednesday is a mark of progress in the school year. As with any long race, however, the time after the halfway point and before the last lap is the most difficult. While enthusiasm usually characterizes the first quarter of school and anticipation for Christmas and summer respectively characterizes the second and fourth quarters, the third quarter feels like a period just to endure. Then comes Lent, adding uneasiness to an already difficult period.

Throughout the Lenten Season, we at Memorial Lutheran School, change our chapel days from Monday to Wednesday each week. This not only alleviates some of the banality of the season but also uses it productively for self-reflection and self-examination. The children, too, learn the pattern of repentance: the words of confession and the proclamation of forgiveness. As they learn of sin and temptation, they also hear of mercy and grace. As they learn of their own mortality ("You are dust and to dust you shall return"), they also learn of the "life everlasting" through the Lord's Christ.

There is no "downtime" to our Lord's mercy. The third quarter may seem long and tiresome, but God's grace is no less abundant in this season. In fact, it is the tedious nature of this season that allows the magnificence of God's goodness to shine through more profoundly. His words lift us from the doldrums and give us hope for true joy to come. May the Lord bless your Lenten observance.
