Isaiah 61

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion - to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified. They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.

Strangers shall stand and tend your flocks; foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers; but you shall be called the priests of the LORD; they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God; you shall eat the wealth of the nations, and in their glory you shall boast. Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot; therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion; they shall have everlasting joy.

For I the LORD love justice; I hate robbery and wrong;I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their offspring shall be known among the nations, and their descendants in the midst of the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge them, that they are an offspring the LORD has blessed.

I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations. (ESV)

There Is No Other God

Mardi Gras

Sunday in my adult confirmation class, one of the members of the class, a Tanzanian Lutheran, pointed out that in Africa many preachers are arising who refuse to be tied down to God's Word. They claim that they have the truth revealed to them in the shrine of their own hearts by the Holy Spirit, without any effort to delve into Scripture as the source of that truth. In fact, many such preachers recommend to their hearers that they should simply reject and throw away their Bible altogether. After all, the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life (2Co 3:6). The Bible is but "the letter." Of course, Paul is not distinguishing the Bible from the work of the Spirit, but the letter of the law from the work of the Spirit, who delivers Christ and His work to us in Holy Scripture.

This approach to "Christianity" bears a striking resemblance to ancient heresy called Montanism. Montanus and his followers claimed to have received a better revelation directly from the Holy Spirit that superseded the divine revelation that came through Jesus Christ. The church rightly rejected this claim as sub-Christian. If Christ is the eternal Son of the Father, then what revelation superior to His could be offered? What is the source of revelation that is superior to that which was delivered by Christ and His chosen apostles?

A revelation that trumps Christ runs immediately afoul of the first commandment and is instantly under the accusation of blasphemy. Who supersedes the beloved Son of the Father and His delivery of the gospel to the holy church? None but those claiming themselves to be god: "Step aside Jesus. Let me fix this for You. You obviously can't handle this. Your divine revelation will not suffice. I have something better." Ultimately we run afoul of the first commandment by all false teaching, in which we claim to know better than the God that gave us the full richness of His grace in the person of His Son, who was incarnate of Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, crucified, dead, and buried. We are offended by the weakness and historical specificity of this full revelation of God's wisdom in His Son.

We think that God is holding something back by hiding Himself this way. And we are partly right. He is holding back the fullness of His wrath by pouring it out on the person of His beloved Son, crucified for us sinners. He is holding back what would simply consume us if He lifted His hand from before our faces and showed us more than His backside (Ex 33:23). He has veiled what cannot and should not be seen that through such a veiling we might be saved; saved even and especially from His divine wrath against our sin and wickedness. Christ joins the poor and afflicted, who are troubled and downtrodden by their sin, to rescue them from it. What better revelation could there be for those who are in such a predicament? We want some high and mighty revelation that takes us backstage with God and gives us a private glimpse of what God is "really like." Woe unto you if you try to remove the mask of God to see something beyond His self-revelation in Christ. You may get exactly what you are looking for. For now content Yourself with the person sent by God, Jesus Christ. There is no other God.

Martin Luther

"Christ is the person sent by God and filled with the Holy Spirit to be the preacher and evangelist to the poor (Is 61:1), that is, the afflicted. This was not done for Christ's sake but for our sake. Thus Paul boasts about his calling in a most ostentatious way, not for his own sake but for the purpose of strengthening us who are weak and for terrifying the ungodly. It is only this preaching and function of Christ that makes the poor and afflicted very strong in the will of God, so that they may know that all things turn out for them according to the will of God. Note this especially, that we must be content with the God of majesty when we consider His hidden but grand and terrifying offices. When we fall into this labyrinth, we become involved in speculations about divinity, and we want to become investigators of His majesty at our peril.

"As for you, be content with the God incarnate. Then you will remain in peace and safety, and you will know God. Cast off speculations about divine glory, as the pope and Mohammed speculate. You stay with Christ crucified, whom Paul and others preach. But those who immerse themselves in their own speculations about the divine...are plunged into confusion with their speculations...But since Christ and His office are here set forth, we must be content with that description."

Prayer

Lord Jesus, keep me from being attracted to false teachings and claims to revelation that supersedes Your own. Ground me in the divine Word which leads to You through the work of the Spirit You send. Free those who are bound to the wickedness of their own hearts, by opening them to the divine Word. Amen.
