Headmaster's Greeting |
GOOD TEACHERS
What makes a good teacher? Roman rhetorician Quintilian defines a good teacher thus: "He must have no vices and tolerate none in his pupils. He must be stern but not melancholy, friendly but not familiar-lest in the first case he incur dislike and in the latter contempt. He must constantly dwell upon the honorable and the good, for the more he admonishes his pupils the less he will need to punish them. He must never lose his temper, yet he must not pass over what deserves correction. He must be clear in his instruction, patient and persevering rather than rigid, and above all able to endure hard toil." Our teachers at Memorial Lutheran School (MLS) aim for all of these qualities, but in one of them I can guarantee that they succeed: enduring hard toil.
Having observed them for half of the academic year, I am very proud of our faculty and staff. They are professional, persevering, and patient. They believe, as did the 17th century father of the textbook Comenius, that education is about imparting knowledge, implanting virtue, and improving piety. As 2013 begins, I am grateful that God has blessed MLS with godly and gracious teachers.
The beginning of another year urges upon us new or renewed goals and resolutions. This applies to our educational task as well. Though tomes have been written to define this task, the best explanation of the educational task I've found is summed up in just four questions:
- What are our children learning?
- How will they learn it?
- When will they learn it?
- How will we know they have learned it?
These questions are great for parents and teachers alike to help them aim and hit the target we call education. Let's commit to using them and clarifying the answers in 2013 for the sake of our children and all that God will have them become.

Parents will no longer enter through the back/north doors to pick up children. Pick-up is now through the main school office door. Miss Hall will call the teacher, and buzz you through. This is for children enrolled in our after school program who are being picked up after 3:45 p.m.
Drop-off and pick-up remains the same for the Infant Wing. |

Auction Meeting Thursday, January 10 4:0 to 5:30 p.m. |
If you would like to join for the final April 20 auction planning, please join us for the meeting next Thursday, January 10. We will meet in room 165 at 4 p.m. and will end the meeting by 5:30, since we have a home basketball game. The venue is set, auction donation letters have gone out, several nice auction items have already been received, and we mainly will be setting the evening's program and talk about auction software. Auction items are still needed, so ideas are welcome! If you have any questions, please call or email LouAnn in the office. |
Uniform Exchange |
There is a used school uniform store in Mrs. Martin's classroom (5th grade). We always appreciate donations to the inventory. We are starting the second semester of the school year and that means children are probably growing! Please consider donating the uniforms that your child is outgrowing - Mrs. Martin accepts donations any time! The stock is a little thin right now, so she could really use some "new" clothes. You are most welcome to email Mrs. Martin to see what is available should you have a need for slacks, shirt, jumper, etc. Mrs. Martin's email is smartin@mlchouston.org. |
MLS Student Achievement |
We congratulate 8th grade student, Luisa Vazquez, who has been selected by TUTS to perform in a national musical theater production in Atlanta, Georgia, from Jan 17th to January 21st. Luisa has been participating in acting for several years. We are proud of our MLS students!
