Headmaster's Greeting

 The Pursuit of Truth

We love our children and want them to have a great education, but do we also value humanity? At his heresy trial, Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." Two millennia later, Erasmus of Rotterdam wrote, "A man without education has no humanity." These pithy maxims express a high view of education but not a very high view of humanity. As Christians we value education, but we also hold a high view of humanity. Christian education, then, is the transmission of God's truth to God's people.

We hold a high view of humanity because God does. He created mankind as the crown of His creation and in a state of holiness like His own (Genesis 1:27). After man fell into sin, God Himself took on human flesh that He might destroy death's hold on mankind (Hebrews 2:14-15). And He promises that He will bring to completion the restoration of our humanity in the day of our Lord's return (Philippians 1:16). Because God values people, we also accord dignity and nobility to each and every person.

God also holds a high view of education. Even before the fall into sin, God directed Adam to study and name the animals. After disclosing the Ten Commandments to Israel, God told parents to diligently teach them to their children. The Holy Scriptures repeatedly commend the pursuit of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. And such pursuit is not merely to keep the mind busy while we await our life's end; it serves the greater purpose of learning, knowing, and sharing truth in a world of confusion and corruption.

Education for its own sake is at best self-serving and at worst a meaningless diversion from the emptiness of life. It is only when we acknowledge the dignity of mankind and the divine origin of truth that education becomes a noble pursuit. Christian education, then, is the thinking of God's thoughts after Him. No matter which area we study, education aims toward knowing God and His creation. Augustine summed it up like this, "Let every good and true Christian understand that wherever truth may be found, it belongs to his Master."
