Headmaster's Greeting |
Farmers or Miners
Please do not misunderstand me; I am not making any value judgments regarding these occupations. I am attempting to draw an educational analogy based primarily on the directionality in which these workers operate. Farmers operate in a horizontal plane; miners' work involves a vertical dimension. Farmers work the surface of the land and sustain life with the crops they grow. Miners dig deeply into the ground to extract diamonds, gold, silver, or coal; none of which is necessary for life. Farmers are vital to society, but as most farmers will tell you, you probably can't get rich farming. The lure of mining, at least in the old days, is the possibility of getting rich, very rich.
Now I have to admit that in His parables Jesus made abundant use of farming and made no references whatsoever to mining. However, St. Paul may have had mining in mind when he wrote, "Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments, and His paths beyond tracing out!" (Romans 11:33). But even if he didn't, I think the analogy can still work.
Here it is: Progressive education is like farming. As one parent recently put it, "It is a mile wide but only an inch deep." In other words, most contemporary education covers a lot of information but rarely gets below the surface. Classical education, on the other hand, is more like mining. It may not cover as much of the surface, but it digs deeply into the subjects it explores. Digging through the surface and the rocks beneath it is hard work, but the rewards can make one rich in knowledge and wisdom.
To stretch the analogy just a bit further, a farmer who works the surface of the earth may become an expert in top soil, but he knows nothing about what lies beneath his land. A miner, on the other hand, learns how to break through the soil like a farmer, but then he also learns how to dig through the mud and rock until he finds the riches he seeks. So it is with the classically educated: they have done the hard work of digging through the literature, problems, people and history to find the riches of wisdom and knowledge. And if they have learned to dig deeply in one or two subjects, they are equipped and confident to dig deeply wherever they want in the years to come.
