Headmaster's Greeting

 

The Pursuit of Happiness

 

The Declaration of Independence of the United States includes the phrase, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." The character trait we are emphasizing this month is citizenship, so a correct understanding of these noble words is important if we are to become good citizens. Because the concepts expressed herein by our Founding Fathers are broad and profound, I will limit this article to last of the three named rights.

 

The phrase "pursuit of Happiness" can leave us with the wrong impression. We might conclude from it that happiness is actually a goal rather than a by-product. As a by-product, temporal happiness is best understood to be the result of achievement. Achievement is the culmination of the joy of learning, the discipline of practice, and the pride or recognition. On the other hand, if happiness is thought of as a goal, it not only might bypass learning and practice, but it likely also will pursue that happiness in ways that are antisocial, immoral, or illegal.

 

Good citizenship involves contributing to one's community. Worthwhile contributions result from each individual in the community discovering, developing, and deploying his or her talents and ability in service to others. When this happens, individuals happily using their talents are recognized by their community with the commensurate rewards for their labor. In other words, good citizens are able to use their talents to enjoy their work that benefits their community. This doesn't just happen by itself; it is the result of an educational system that values individual talents and honors individual achievement. It begins with a classical approach to education.

Fall Festival Committee Meeting Monday, October 15 at 5:30 p.m.

 

 

The Fall Festival committee volunteers will meet next Monday, October 15, at 5:30 p.m. in room 165, which is in the hallway between the school office and fellowship hall. 

Marte Stangeland would like to thank those parents who have already gone into "Sign up Genius" to choose a time to help at the Fall Festival. All parents should have received an email from Marte regarding the areas and times where help is needed.  If you have questions, you may email Marte Stangeland at [email protected]. Don't forget about the class basket items. Some other items that are needed are empty gallon milk jugs, cases of bottled water, 12 pack of soda, and little prizes for games (you may have some at home - toys and prizes received at restaurants). The Parent Teacher League appreciates all of you who make this a fun event for the whole family!

Fire Safety Week

 

This week was Fire Safety Week! On Monday some of the firemen from Station 28 on Chimney Rock visited Early Childhood. The children learned to not be afraid of the fireman in all of his gear, and they had a chance to get in the fire truck and also see how the fire hose works! One of the firemen is the dad of MLS Early Start student, Kean Wilcox. Thanks to Firefighter Brian Wilcox and his team from Fire Station 28 who made this past Monday afternoon so much fun.    

 

Parent-Teacher Conferences Wednesday October 17, K to 8th No School

 

 Kindergarten through 8th grade Parent-Teacher conferences are next Wednesday, October 17. There is no school that day for the students in the these classes.  Parents should have already set the conference time with their child's teacher. Make sure you have returned the childcare reservation form if you plan on your child staying in childcare for the day.

Girls Volleyball

 

The Varsity team will compete in the State Tournament on October 19 and 20 at Salem Lutheran.  Their first game is against Abiding Word Lutheran at 12 Noon.  October 19 will be a Spirit Day in support of our girls!

Go Lady Mustangs!

Spirit Day Next Friday, October 19

 

Spirit Day is next Friday, October 19!  The girls varsity volleyball team is participating in the State Volleyball Tournament at Salem Lutheran in Tomball.  Our second round of Spirit T-shirt orders will arrive in time for the Spirit Day.  Students may wear the Spirit shirt and jeans next Friday. 

"Pink Out Day" Wear Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 26

 

 In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October 26 will be a "Pink Out" day.  Everyone is encouraged to wear pink to school that Friday!   

Memorial Lutheran Decals

 

  If you have not yet picked up your Memorial Lutheran car decals, there are still a few available! Show your school pride and support of MLS. There are some decals at the front desk, the back gym hallway and by the check-in computer in baby land. Just pick one up - no charge!  They are easy to put on your back window!
