 Our Personal Meaning of Work
I have been fortunate enough to cultivate work that has meaning for me and allows me to take care of myself. I created my private practice precisely because I wanted two things: To love what I do for work and to take more care of myself. I wanted to have a more flexible schedule that gave me time for more self-care, such as yoga, meditation, playing tennis, deepening my intimate and social relationships, etc.
I understand that not many work situations allow for this flexibility- but no matter what our situation (and circumstances are,) WE ALL NEED TO PRIMARILY CARE FOR OURSELVES. I BELIEVE WHEN WE UNDERSTAND OUR RELATIONSHIP TO WORK, WE ARE MORE LIKELY TO DO JUST THAT - AND TO HAVE BALANCE AND FULFILLMENT IN OUR LIVES.

Stress Relief: Becoming Aware of How You Spend your Time
Many times we are not aware of how we are actually spending time. Ex. too much work or too much time with hobbies or too little _______. Fill in the blank.
Try this! Ask your spouse, a trusted friend, or someone significant who has a pulse on your life to objectively, without criticism or suggestions, to tell you how you are spending your time, especially how you balance work and self-care. Simply receive the information and do not defend or dialogue. Thank them for their observations. Be prepared.
Afterward, sit quietly for just a few minutes. Set a timer if you are concerned. You may do some deep breathing, journaling, praying or meditating. You may want to walk.
The goal here is not to take action. We want to simply become more conscious of our work/life (with an eye from a trusted other) and how we are living in it. Only from this kind and compassionate place, is it possible to move toward positive changes.
