Chronic Conditions - A Balancing Act -
When Things Just Won't Go Away

Chronic conditions, as much as we wish otherwise, just won't go away. But they can change. They require continual awareness, management and acceptance. In other words, they need your attention!

Chronic conditions, whether physical, emotional or cognitive affect the whole self. The physical affects the psychological, which affects the emotional, which affects the spiritual (our purpose and meaning.) This interconnection is the premise behind holistic care and mind body treatment.

Chronic conditions go right to our sense of self and place in the world. Often they force us to reshuffle our lives and our identity. We find we have to change the idea (or expand the idea) of who we think we are - We often have to let go of our old self-image.

Stress Relief Tip: Exercise in Awareness

This can be done either alone or with a  compassionate, trusted friend. Write in a notebook or verbally share with your friend (who may take notes for you) all aspects of your chronic condition that you are able to articulate. Perhaps have your friend contribute.

Consider how your condition is affecting you physically, emotionally, vocationally, intimately - in every aspect of your life: Your personal relationships, especially your marriage, your everyday basic functioning, your faith and belief system. Pass no judgement, do not attempt to fix, just list. Try to remain detached from your emotions.

Often, the mere act of identifying and naming what you are living through is a relief in itself. Becoming conscious of our experience is an important step in the journey.
