Hi everyone!

You may think I hit the wrong key on the keyboard when you read the title! Shouldn't that read: Juice FASTING? Well, it's no typo. Juice FEASTING isn't quite the same as juice fasting since there's no restriction of calories on a juice feast. Let's find out more...

Most people know the profound and oft times miraculous benefits of exclusive juice fasting for 1,2, even 7 days of low volume healthy, organic juices.  I've even known folks who fasted with nothing but juice and water for more than 30 days with amazing health and weight loss results. I've personally done a 1 or 2 day juice fast in the past and have wanted to do a longer one for many, many years since first being diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2006.

Part of my reluctance of doing a juice fast the last few years however, has been the weight loss that usually comes with fasting of any sort. As I'm already underweight and always struggling to maintain or gain more, it's kept me from pursuing it. Then I stumbled upon an article on Juice FEASTING while looking for a good juicer. I had never heard of it before and have since done a lot of research in the last couple of weeks.

So what exactly is juice FEASTING? On a juice feast, the goal is to drink enough fresh juice that you aren't restricting calories at all. In practice that means drinking at least a gallon of fresh juice per day (primarily green juices). The juices should be fresh, varied, and organic with nothing pasteurized or altered at all. You eat absolutely nothing else while on the juice feast.

Why would anyone want to do a juice feast in the first place? Well, the benefits of it are extraordinary.

Approximately 30% of our daily energy is geared toward digestion. Since juicing requires almost NO digestive energy, that 30% is now re-routed toward "cleaning house", i.e., the body is now free to work on the all-important task and necessity of detoxification.

An increasing number of people in this country and people I've spoken with are dealing with impaired nutrition and malnutrition. Oh, they may be getting plenty of calories, but their ability to absorb and utilize the life-giving benefits from healthy foods is greatly impaired resulting in countless chronic health issues.

However, when we drink raw vegetable juices, the situation is entirely different, as these micronutrients are easily digested, absorbed and assimilated within 10 to 15 minutes after we drink them. They are used almost entirely in the nourishment and regeneration of the cells, tissues, glands and organs of the body.

Another important aspect is that all vegetables are alkalizing. The benefits of maintaining alkalinity in the body are well-known and include:

  •  Improved focus and mental clarity
  •  Improved heart and cardiovascular function
  •  Improved bone & joint function
  •  Stronger Immunity
  •  Better digestion
  •  Better overall mood
  •  Healthier hair, skin and nails
  •  Natural body weight
  •  Increased Energy

Those are just a small fraction of the benefits of juicing which would take up PAGES if I were to list them all. For example, if you do some searching online, you'll see that a great many people have been completely cured of terminal diseases like cancer, MS, bacterial infections and many more by juicing alone.

For those who need to lose weight, juice feasting is almost guaranteed to produce significant results. For those of us who are underweight, many have reported gains. The reason? As one is juicing, the intestines, the main area of nutrient absorption, begin to shed irritant mucus that has been preventing nutrient absorption due to inflammatory-producing foods we've been eating most of our lives. After just a few days of juicing, the mucosal lining begins to heal and nutrients begin being absorbed much more efficiently.

So rather than these life-giving nutrients simply passing through without being absorbed, they're now eagerly taken in and used by the body. I even recently read of an emaciated AIDS patient who re-gained 15 lbs of muscle after juicing for just 60 days. He also had an enormous boast in his disease-fighting immunity cells and apparently went into remission.

So, in order to hopefully demonstrate the benefits of juice FEASTING, I'm going to do one myself. There are a few websites out there promoting 90 day super-cleansing juice feasts, however, I believe many people might find that very difficult to follow. Additionally, juice feasting or fasting is not something you want to do indefinitely, as the body was designed to eat solid foods. However, juicing for a limited time, can propel the body past health plateaus and into new areas of fitness not realized before by many.

Beginning on or around March 10th, I'll be embarking on a 30 day juice FEAST. I'd like to make it interesting and entertaining for all of you so...I'm going to be documenting nearly every day of my juice FEAST as a video diary/blog if you'd like to follow along. I'll send out an email link soon if you're interested so please keep an eye out for it. I'll try to keep each day's log short and simple since I know your time is valuable.

In preparation, I've begun making one of each of my meals/day a healthy green juice and will increase that over the next few weeks until I'm ready to do the 30 day, 4 quarts/day juice feast!

Cost: even though I'll be juicing a large amount of vegetables and some fruits (as much as 10-12 lbs per day), I won't be buying or eating breads, dairy products, meats, nuts, seeds, alcohol, etc., so the cost will be relatively the same; anywhere from $10-$20 per day.

Will I be getting enough calories to maintain or even gain weight? My initial 1 quart green drinks that I started making just a few days ago, consist of primarily cucumber/zucchini, carrots and celery, with the remaining 25% being a combination of mixed greens, beets, low-glycemic fruits, parsley, etc. I was surprised to find the calorie content was just around 478 calories, with the inclusion of 1 tablespoon of flax seed oil. So, with 4 quarts being consumed/day: 478 x 4 = 1,912 calories. This is actually more calories than I was eating on a regular diet! However, these calories are pure nutrition - no fiber, no useless carbs, no chemicals, nothing to interfere with digestion. The caloric content can be upped or reduced depending on the types and amounts of vegetables and fruits used. Personally, I'm fairly excited to see what the results will be.

You may still be asking specifically why I'm doing this. Even though I had been maintaining a level of health higher than the first few years I had Lyme and it's concomitant problems, I still wasn't 100% (or even 90 or 80)! November happened to be a very stressful month for a variety of reasons, and this caused whatever bacteria or co-infections that were just kind of "hanging around" in me to come out of hiding triggering a severe exacerbation of Lyme-type symptoms. They've eased some since, but I'd really like to break through the health plateaus I've been stuck at for the last 8 years and lord willing, try to establish a level of health I can't even remember! Will juice feasting be a means? We'll find out and I hope you will join me on my journey.

A couple of last points: to enhance taste and nutritional quality, you can add some super-foods to this already abundant super-juice; nutrition such as bee pollen, spirulina, omega oils (raw, unheated, unprocessed vegetarian sources only).

And lastly, there's taste. I was somewhat afraid that a pure green juice would be rather repulsive, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's pretty tasty, especially when adding something sweet like an apple or orange. As I've actually been consuming a green drink per day as part of meal plan for several days, I'm finding I'm enjoying them more and looking forward to each one, not just for the taste, but knowing that I'm drinking nothing but pure, organic nutrition.

Again, I hope you will follow along with me next month as I JUICE FEAST!

Thank you once again for reading and I look forward to serving you!

Until next time, I remain yours in good health!

Sincerely,

Dr. Mike
