Congratulations to Helen Weaver with Sheltering Arms who won the drawing for completing the WLI Engagement Survey.
Results from 58 responses include:
- 797 items contributed to early childhood organizations.
- 324 hours volunteered to early childhood projects.
- 87 contacts with state and local elected officials.
- 1,287 people received information in the form of a presentation or conversation about the importance of early childhood education.
Respondents said they would be stronger advocates or more fully engaged if they had more data and stories of children and families impacted by the early childhood effort; more site visits and bus tours; and more advocacy training and events. Thank you to those who completed the survey. We have only one way to track the full extent of your engagement activity. . . and that's for you to tell us. This really brief survey is our only way to capture your efforts. We appreciate all that you do and know that each of you is active in your own way. The next survey will cover January - April.

Advocacy Update
To all of the WLI advocates who visited, called, or emailed your state legislators ... YOUR VOICE WAS HEARD! Now that the Virginia General Assembly session has wound down, here are the final budget numbers for our legislative priorities:
- CHIP of Virginia: $600,000 was restored to the state budget. That restores most of the reduction that had been in the second year of the two-year budget when it was adopted last year.
- Healthy Families Virginia: $550,000 was restored to the state budget. This is about ¼ of the amount that has been cut since 2010.
All in all, pretty good results for a tough economic year. When you see your legislators, please be sure to thank them too.

Volunteer Opportunity
Attention Spanish speakers! The kindergarten registration campaign is seeking Spanish-speaking volunteers to assist on registration day, April 11, 2013. Volunteers are needed on-site at some schools to usher families into the school registration area and translate for them.
If you are interested in volunteering, please email Heather Wells or call 804-775-6482. You will need to provide your name, contact information and locality preference. Translation assistance is needed in Richmond City, Chesterfield, Henrico, Petersburg and Colonial Heights. More Learning
If you're interested in learning more ... here's an article from Education Week entitled Study Says Early Home Visits Show School Benefits. Children whose families took part in a home-visiting program in their earliest years showed some positive benefits once they enrolled in school, compared with their peers who did not receive home visits, according to a recently-released study from Healthy Families New York, a home visitation program that enrolls about 5,600 families each year.
