On the Campaign Trail

2012 Day of ActionWhat do ballroom and line dancing, indoor golf, a pie toss and volunteering have in common? These fun events are just a few of the ways that local businesses, schools, governments and agencies are showing their community spirit and celebrating their United Way campaigns!

Participating in a United Way campaign is a great way to have fun and promote teambuilding in your workplace--and it gives you the opportunity to improve thousands of lives right here, where you live.

Thank you for your support and for living united!

United Way is proud of the more than 1,000 women who unite through the Women's Leadership Initiative (WLI) to generously give, advocate and volunteer to improve the lives of our region's youngest citizens.

At the recent 2012 Annual WLI Breakfast, keynote speaker Alma J. Powell, chair of America's Promise Alliance, commended the members of WLI for their outstanding work to prepare children to succeed in school and in life.

The most prestigious honor bestowed by United Way of Greater Richmond & Peterburg has been awarded to Donald T. Cowles, former senior vice president of Reynolds Metals Co., and his wife Jane M. Cowles, an advocate for reforesting Richmond's city blocks.

The Cowles have received the Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award, which is given each year by United Way to an individual or couple whose service and generosity exemplify the true spirit of volunteerism.

"The Cowles were chosen for this year's Tocqueville Society Award, both for their commitment to United Way and for their broad-sweeping devotion to our region." said Tom Byrd, 2012 Tocqueville Society Chair.  Read more
