Refresher: Definitions
OBESITY: noun.
Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health. It is defined by body mass index (BMI) and further evaluated in terms of fat distribution via the waist-hip ratio and total cardiovascular risk factors. BMI is closely related to both percentage body fat and total body fat.

Obesity - The specifics

~Any BMI ≥ 35 or 40 is severe obesity

~A BMI of ≥ 35 and experiencing obesity-related health conditions or ≥40-44.9 is morbid obesity

~A BMI of ≥ 45 or 50 is super obesity

Wiggle Therapy



Wiggle Therapy: They taught us wiggle therapy in Kindergarten and it worked wonders on our tiny little bodies and developing brains. And then we got all grown up and sophisticated and forgot all about it. It is time to bring it back and I love it! Let me refresh your memory, but first put yourself back in kindergarten: maybe you are sitting on the rug and story time has just concluded. Your teacher, the one you just adore, says, "It's time to shake the wiggles out!" And at once 25 little kids jump up from the rug in crazy wiggly-jiggly-giggly good time fun. Remember that? Why in the world did we give that up? We put our arms above our heads and reached for the sky. We bent down and touched our toes. We hopped, skipped, wiggled and jumped. There was not a self-conscious wallflower among us. We were silly wiggle worms.

I suppose wiggle therapy takes about a minute, maybe less. But the effects are lingering. Better than a chocolate buzz, the wiggle thrill lasts for quite a while. Our thoughts become clear and our focus sharper because we have joyously told our metabolic workers inside, "There is a party going on outside!" Our heart rate is elevated and our blood oxygen levels increase. And the needful ping we may have perceived to be hunger is gone.

Now, realistically, in a grown-up society I know in many cases it would be frowned upon to leap up from our work-a-day to gyrate about in wiggle therapy. No doubt we would be committed to another kind of therapy. However, in a more subtle fashion we can stretch, flex and bend our bodies delivering respectable doses of oxygen to the cells while causing a meaningful rise in heart rate. And if all else fails, make haste to the rest room and lock the door. Then go crazy and shake the wiggles out.

By the way, if you are an office worker tethered to your desk all day there is a legitimate health reason to practice wiggle therapy. Extended time seated in an office chair increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis, a condition that causes swelling, pain, and potentially fatal blood vessel damage. Inactivity slows circulation, which can lead to a blood clot. Protect yourself with a session or two of wiggle therapy each day.

Don't you just love Back to School time, a mid-year start-over so to speak? This is my favorite time of year and as luck would have it, my ultimate start-over -- gastric bypass -- was on September 13, 1999. Talk about going Back to School in a big way! Last Saturday marked 15 years since my surgery. Where did the time go? While visiting with my husband about this milestone I said to him, "After 15 years you would think I'd have this down to a science. But I still have to work at using my tool and weight management every day, it is so hard!"
 
Because he is a wise person he replied, "It's hard work because it IS hard."

So today, in the spirit of Back to School I present our newly published Infographic: The ABC's of WLS. You can view it in full down below or click on the image to open a PDF file for download and printing. I hope you find the alphabetic snippets inspiring and useful.

One thing I have learned with absolute certainty is weight management can only be achieved when we have a plan. Leaving our menu to chance didn't work before surgery and it doesn't work after surgery. The plan need not be elaborate. Some days I scribble on my planner: B-eggs; L-tuna; D-chicken. There's my protein. I'll manage the details when I get there. On better organized weeks I plan the weekly menu and post on the refrigerator. This produces stellar results. Two Opportunities
for Kindness
 
"As you review the basics you have two opportunities to treat yourself kindly. First, when you read one of the Basics and think, "Yeah, right, I know that.  I'm already doing that," do not dismiss this fact. Give yourself a big happy pat on the back and say, "YES! I am doing that! I am doing the right thing!" How often do we truly take a chance to congratulate ourselves on doing the right thing? If I were there with you I would be all over you with hugs and praise saying "Good for you! I am so proud of you!" Next, if you come across a Basic where you could improve here is your chance to try just a little harder and do just a little better to treat your body well. Make a mental note to pay more attention to the liquid restrictions or manage your fork just a little smarter. These are opportunities to excel, to treat yourself kindly, to improve your quality of living. Seize them!"

Daily Intelligent Eating Triumphs

The truth is, in order to make our tool work we must mindfully follow a diet. Not just during weight loss, but for the rest of our lives. In Day 6: Beyond the 5 Day Pouch Test I coined an acronym for the word DIET so we could come to peaceful terms with the word and the need to have a plan for maintaining our nutritional health.

Let's discuss each word in our acronym DIET, beyond the definition.

Daily Perhaps the best known reminder that we must partake food daily is from the Holy Bible, "Give us this day our daily bread." (Matthew 6:11) While that is a prayer of thanks it is also a reminder that to nurture our bodies we must provide food. That means every new day we have the opportunity to make right our nutritional wellness. We have at least three chances daily to feed our body the things it needs so it can give back to us strong bones, healthy lungs, clear eyes, and a sharp mind. How exciting that every single day of our life we have the opportunity to be benevolent to ourselves? I get goose bumps just thinking about my next opportunity to build healthier me.

Intelligent I love this part of DIET because the weight loss surgery community is notoriously gluttonous for intelligence. Before surgery we are near-hysterical researchers. After surgery we are constant question askers. Why, here you are with this book in hand, seeking intelligence. So of course it stands to reason that when it comes to our DIET we will act with reason and intellect in a consequent, logical, rational, and reasonable manner. Good for you. Our inclination to pursue knowledge and learning is well served by this part of DIET.

Eating  Here is another favorite part of this acronym: Eating! Now that we are prepared to make intelligent dietary choices each day we get to the good part, eating. Based on your personal diet prescribed by your bariatric center you may eat three, four, or even five times a day. And since you made intelligent choices you will feel good physically and mentally. Making daily intelligent dietary choices gives us the freedom to enjoy eating without the mental anguish we all feel when we make poor unintelligent dietary choices.

Triumphs Now for the celebration: You did it! As many times a day as you want you get to feel and express uplifting joy over success and victory! Right now get up off this sofa and you do the best happy dance ever. I'll join you. There is an abundance of joy in your heart: let it out! You have earned this triumph. You are a powerful intelligent individual and you have embraced DIET to make wise and careful choices to bring you health and contentment. The health and contentment you deserve to enjoy. Do the happy dance.
