+ Assistant Bishop Keith Whitmore will preside at a Christmas Eve service at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24, at Woodruff Park in downtown Atlanta with Church of the Common Ground. The Rev. Mary Wetzel is vicar. All are welcome.
 
+ Bishop Rob Wright will preside and celebrate for the Christmas Eve liturgy twice on Dec. 24 at the Cathedral of St. Philip: at 8:30 p.m. and at 11:30 p.m. Preacher is Dean Sam Candler. A Choral Prelude and Carols begins 30 minutes prior to each service. This Festal Choral Eucharist will be televised beginning at 11:35 p.m. on WSB-TV.

  In 2016 you are invited by the Commission for Dismantling Racism to prepare for the launching of "Reclaiming Hope through Remembering: Pilgrimages to Georgia Sites of Martyrdom," commonly known as lynching sites.
       The diocesan commission urges all parishes to participate in a diocese-wide reading of Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson during the seasons  between Christmas and Easter. A study/discussion guide for the book is now available on the diocesan website.

+ The Rev. Lynne E. Washington 
has been appointed priest in charge of Church of the Incarnation in southwest Atlanta. She is formerly vicar of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Richmond, Va., and the immediate past executive director and CEO of the Peter Paul Development Center, Inc., in Richmond's community of Church Hill.  She was ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Southern Ohio and is a graduate of The General Theological Seminary, New York City, class of 1996.

+ A sermon by the Very Rev. Charles Fischer appears in a new collection titled "A Storm Has Passed." Each of the 14 published sermons was preached after the shootings June 21 at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C. Fischer is rector of St. Paul's, Atlanta, and dean of the Southwest Convocation. 

+ Nan Ross, who edited Pathways and this e-newsletter for more than 10 years and became director of communication for the Diocese of Atlanta eight years ago, retires at the end of December.  This is her last issue of Connecting.  Watch for Bishop Wright's announcement of his plans for communication in the new year. Bishop to teach on Jesus' leadership at seminary 
Bishop Rob Wright will teach a three-day class at Candler School of Theology during the school's "J-term" in early January. The one-credit course, The Leadership of Jesus of Nazareth: God and Good in Motion, will meet Jan. 5-7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Emory University campus. The class is open to the public, which may audit the class; Candler and the Diocese of Atlanta will offer a special scholarship price for clergy and lay leaders. 2 sites to host live webcasts of Trinity Institute 
on 'Sacred Conversations for Racial Justice'  
Trinity Institute 2016, to be offered in New York City Jan. 21-23, can be accessed live at two locations in the Diocese of Atlanta: St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Atlanta, and St. Thomas, Columbus. This year's theme is "Listen for a Change: Sacred Conversations for Racial Justice," and keynote speakers include columnist Nicholas Kristof, professor and playwright Anna Deavere Smith, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, Dr. Emily Townes, dean of Vanderbilt Divinity School, and journalist Michele Norris. Registration ($35 for the program and meals) is underway now for either location here > 

2 faith communities host noted professor 
Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, Vanderbilt University professor of New Testament and Jewish studies, is guest speaker for a weekend of teaching and worship at Holy Innocents' Episcopal Church and neighboring Temple Sinai in Sandy Springs Jan. 8-10. The program is titled "Sacred Words: Universal Messages." All are invited to participate. For more information, click here >

Interested in Spanish instruction this summer?  
A Spanish Immersion Class will be offered this summer at Christ Church Episcopal, Norcross. Part of the class focuses on Spanish liturgy and commonly used words and phrases. "We need feedback soon if you're interested in attending," says Deacon Juan Sandoval. The class is now scheduled May 30 to June 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with experienced instructor Rosario Madison. Special Worship
Choral Eucharist at 4 p.m. for second Sunday of Christmas 
The Cathedral of St. Philip will offer a Choral Eucharist at 4 p.m. Jan. 3 to celebrate the second Sunday after Christmas. The Cathedral Schola will sing Tomás Luis de Victoria's Missa "O magnum mysterium," along with the motet on which the mass setting is based.

'Christmas Fantasia' concert is Dec. 28 at Cathedral
St. Timothy's, Decatur, will present "A Christmas Fantasia" concert at the Cathedral of St. Philip at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28. The program features  soprano Indra Thomas and works by Ralph Vaughn Williams, along with the premiere of a Christmas cantata by Terry Lowrey, St. Timothy's organist and music director. Learn centering prayer discipline in the new year 
Contemplative Outreach of Atlanta offers an Introduction to Centering Prayer workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 7171 Glenridge Drive, Sandy Springs. Cost is $25. The series will introduce participants to the four simple steps of Centering Prayer and provide opportunities to practice the discipline in daily life. Interfaith group hosts 'A Celebration of Children' 
"A Celebration of Children" conference is scheduled Thursday, Jan. 28, at Marietta First United Methodist Church, featuring keynote speaker Tom Rawlings, attorney, former juvenile court judge and director of Georgia's Office of the Child Advocate. Sponsored by the Interfaith Children's Movement, the event is open to all who register, and display space is provided to those interested. Cost is $10, and registration deadline is Jan. 19.
