Notes From Alycea: The Rhythm Issue
|
Greetings!
She was shocked and pleased at the same time. "Alycea, you're the only one I've every heard say that." My jaw dropped. I had only stated the obvious - that you must perform the same exercises over and over again if you are intent on training your body.
Progressive resistance training , which is the mechanism by which muscles are made both bigger and stronger demands repetition, is defined by it. What followed was an enthusiastic agreement between myself and Pilates luminary Deborah Lessen on the fundamentals of training physiology, namely that you must repeat the same exercises in order to improve e.g. "change" your body. A new routine each and every time, while entertaining does not yield impressive results.
There is a rhythm to this method and it requires that you commit to the system. A set series of moves performed in sequence with vigor, appropriate muscle loading and yes, repetition. Once you have committed the order of exercises to memory along with your spring settings and transitions you can go back and start to really truly deepen your practice.
When you get into the rhythm of your routine, you'll find the rhythm will get into your body. Before the summer ends take some time to do your 100 on the mat. Then try to keep that rhythm as you go through a few more moves. Sometime in September hop in for our Open Gym and test your rhythm on the Reformer. And if you really want a challenge - sign up for our upcoming Mat-a-thon where you'll find a rhythmical side of the Pilates Mat you never new existed.
Have a wonderful Labor day weekend!
