Notes From Alycea: The Real Life Issue
|
Greetings!

Last week I happened to be in the studio when a client came in excited for their session. While waiting for the designated teacher, a different teacher walked by and said "Hello". The client lit up - "I've been watching you and I think you're great." Obviously the teacher was pleased and like a proud momma I could feel myself stand a little taller. But that wasn't the end of it. The client went on to explain what in particular they had noticed and why they were interested in taking some sessions with this particular teacher. "I feel like I could be free to make a mistake with you. Like it would be ok to be bad at something." "Indeed" the teacher nodded and smiled broadly. I too nodded vigorously in assent. After all, how could you hope to be good at anything if you aren't free to be awful at it initially? After some further three way discussion, the client's scheduled teacher whisked them away and the day continued but the conversation stayed with me.
Real Pilates is founded on my desire to "make Pilates available to everyone" (also our mission statement). When I reflected upon the entire exchange later that day, I couldn't help but marvel at the incredible intimacy that exists between students and their teachers. And the tremendous risk that comes from handing over your body (and therefore all your emotions) to another human being in the hopes that you will come out the other side just a little better for the hour. Pilates personal training is deeply personal. Even our small group classes are designed to hold you accountable. At the end of the day what this client wanted was a safe place to fail and then maybe fail better and then, over time, succeed. I feel honored that we made Pilates truly available for them. I hope that many more of you have found that Real Pilates is a genuinely safe place to pursue your health and wellness. I can't think of anything more "real" and more effective. ~AlyceaRemember to join us to fight Breast Cancer this month with Certified Instructor Erika Rucci. Community class means pay what you can.
