Fact: 34 U.S. dog bite-related fatalities occurred in 2015.

Don't be fooled by the standard statement, "My dog won't bite".  Any dog could bite if threatened or scared.  Treat dogs as you would an electric power line never assume they are safe.

The Dog Stopper Pop Action Umbrella is a great tool to use in the field to scare away dogs. The pop in this umbrella will scare most dogs away with just a few quick open and close motions.

How Dog Bites Affect Your Employees!

Depending on the line of work your company is in, the risk factor for encountering a dog can vary drastically. Employees at risk for encountering dogs in their line of work should keep the mindset that on a daily basis they may encounter a number of dogs on their route. However, this mindset does not lessen the fear when a potential attack is eminent. If employees are at risk for encountering dogs during work it is critical they are trained to never believe an owner when they state their dog won't bite. Dogs have no discrimination and will look to exhort their dominance when given the chance. For employees who have suffered an attack, they know all to well how quickly a dog's behavior can change. Once an employee suffers a dog bite it will never be forgotten and the physical scars of the attack remain as a vivid reminder of what they have survived. What seems like a simple task to an average person may now take a large amount of effort for those who have experienced a viscous dog attack. After the physical pain has subsided from a previous attack, the surviving individual may still be coming to terms emotionally with the permanent scarring left behind. The emotional turmoil of the scarring may leave the employee feeling embarrassed enough to wear a long sleeve shirt on a hot summer day just to avoid showing their scars to the world.

Detroit Post Office Delivers Important Message About Dog Bites January 2016

DETROIT, MI - They walk the streets every day delivering America's mail, and Detroit area letter carriers want to deliver a special message to the community about working together to avoid the cost and pain of dog bites.
Dog attacks are a serious problem for the entire community, and not just our letter carriers, who were victimized by nearly 5,700 dog attacks nationwide in 2014. But that number pales in comparison to the more than 2 million children who received dog bite injuries in a single year.
"That's why we want to deliver this important message," said Detroit Postmaster Derron Bray. "Several of our letter carriers know first-hand about both the prevention and the pain of animal attacks, and we want to do whatever we can to help educate the community - especially parents and pet owners."
While some attribute attacks on letter carriers to dogs' inbred aversion to uniforms, experts say the psychology actually runs much deeper. Every day that a letter carrier comes into a dog's territory, the dog barks and the letter carrier leaves. Day after day the dog sees this action repeated. After a week or two, the dog appears to feel invincible against intruders. Once the dog gets loose, there's a good chance it will attack.

What is Tetanus?

Tetanus is an infection caused by a germ (bacterium) called Clostridium tetani which can attack the muscles and nervous system. Tetanus is a serious infection which can even be fatal. Tetanus germs (bacteria) live in the soil and dirt. The bacteria may get into your body through a cut or a wound in the skin. The bacteria make a poison (toxin) which causes the illness.

Even small wounds such as a prick from a thorn can allow enough bacteria to get into the body to cause tetanus. The illness usually takes 7-8 days to develop, but can vary from one day to two months. Therefore, you may have forgotten about a small cut before the illness starts.

Do I need a dose of tetanus vaccine after cuts, bites, etc?
If you are not immunised or up-to-date with boosters then an injection of vaccine is usually advised.
If you are up-to-date with tetanus immunisations, then you do not need a tetanus vaccine.
If your wound or injury is considered to be high risk for tetanus (for example, where there has been significant contact with soil or manure) then an injection of human tetanus immunoglobulin is usually given, regardless of whether your have been immunised against tetanus or not. This gives extra protection against tetanus.

Breed of the Month: German Shorthaired Pointer

This versatile sporting dog breed hunts many types of game, retrieves on land or from water, and is an affectionate companion. He has a striking, easy-care coat, but he needs plenty of vigorous exercise.

History:
While not proven, some think that the German Shorthaired Pointer is a descendant of different types of German hunting, scent hounds, trail and track dogs, such as the Old Spanish Pointer, German Bird Dog, Hounds and the Foxhound.
Later the English Pointer was crossed in to add speed and endurance. German hunters were after an all-purpose utility dog that not only had a good nose, but could point, track, was an excellent retriever and gundog, in both field and water for both feather and fur. They also wanted a dog that was an excellent weekend hunter, but made a good companion and watchdog. The German Shorthaired Pointer contributed in the development of the German Wirehaired Pointer. The German Shorthaired Pointer's talents are show dog, obedience, gundog, retrieving, tracking trials, field trials and hunting tests.

Woman critically hurt, others injured in dog attack
Four dogs shot, killed by responding officer

SANFORD, Fla.
A police report reveals new information about the chaotic scene officers found at an apartment complex, where a woman was mauled by a pack of dogs Tuesday afternoon.

The woman, who has not been identified, is fighting for her life at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Police said six dogs attacked two other adults and two children at the Stonebrook Apartments off West Airport Boulevard, but it's still unclear what led to the incident.

Police were called to the complex just after 3:15 p.m. and discovered what a responding officer called a horrible sight. In the incident report, the officer said he saw several people with bloody clothes and open wounds and "several adults and children screaming that the dogs are killing her."

"The pit bulls had the unknown person on the floor of the apartment in a sitting position, biting the victim in the arms, legs and upper body area," the officer wrote.
Police said the officer attempted to get the dogs off the woman, but ultimately had to discharge his weapon. Four of the dogs were killed, and one other dog ran away and died later. The surviving dog was taken by Animal Services.

Stonebrook's pet policy limits residents to two dogs and also has restrictions on breeds. Details as to why so many dogs were in the apartment and who owned them have not been released.

Dog attacks becoming a problem for Ameren utility workers
After having numerous incidents where workers have been attacked by dogs, Ameren Illinois is publicly asking customers to be mindful of their pets.

The latest incident happened in January 2016 where a lineman was bitten on the hand by a dog in Viola, Illinois, according to a statement from Ameren Illinois. That employee returned to work in early February.
The utility company said that over the last five years, more than 40 Ameren Illinois field workers have been treated for injuries after being "attacked and bitten by dogs" while working.
