Police Open Fire on Dog That Ran At City Worker
POSTED 2:06 PM, AUGUST 5, 2015, BY MELISSA PAMER AND STEVE KUZJ, UPDATED AT 10:49PM, AUGUST 5, 2015

Police opened fire on a dog that was believed to have attacked a city worker in South Los Angeles Wednesday, and authorities were searching for the animal -- and possibly two other dogs -- hours after the incident.
A call came into police about a vicious dog incident in the 4700 block of Honduras Street about 9:30 a.m., according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Liliana Preciado.

An L.A. city worker was tending to trees in the area when he when a group of aggressive dogs ran at him. He was hurt by falling as he tried to get away, police on scene said.

When officers got to the scene, they saw the dog pack and one officer fired his gun three times, according to police. It was not known if the animal was struck, and police were continuing to search for it and other dogs that may have been involved.

Pit Bull Kills Woman, Injures Another in Davie County, North Carolina
UPDATE 08/25/15
New information has been released about the fatal pit bull attack in North Carolina. On Monday, Cathy Wheatcraft, 48, was fatally attacked by her neighbor's pit bull. She had just gotten her mail and was walking back to her home when the dog attacked, according to Davie County deputies. The dog "drug her down the yard and fatally bit her," Sheriff Andy Stokes said. The pit bull also attacked neighbor Sheena Truesdale, 31, who tried to help the victim.
"[The pit bull] growled and charged me, caught me in my shoulder and that's what made me fall to the ground. We were fighting and then he caught my inner thigh." - Sheena Truesdale, survivor and pit bull owner
Truesdale tried to get into a nearby car to escape the animal, but the pit bull continued coming at her. After she got into the car and tried to shut the door, the pit bull latched onto her arm again. The dog was still latched on, trying to pull her out of the car, when a Cooleemee police officer arrived. "If it wasn't for that police man who showed up, [the pit bull] would've got me out of the car, my arm would've been much worse and I would probably be dead myself," Truesdale said.
The fatally attacking pit bull was declared a "nuisance animal" in May after escaping its owner's property and attacking a dog. In a strange twist, the victimized dog belonged to Truesdale. At some point before attacking the two women Monday, the pit bull escaped its owner's home through a window. Truesdale is a pit bull fan and owns three of them. Despite what she witnessed and underwent, she does not believe "pit bulls are aggressive dogs." Her death wish is her own.

US Mint Police Shoot Pit Bull That Attacked Employee

Updated at 11:17 PM PDT on Tuesday, Jul 21, 2015

A pit bull's leg will likely be amputated after the dog allegedly attacked a U.S. Mint employee and two other people outside the Mint building in San Francisco and was shot by federal police.
The dog, named Blue, apparently escaped from its home near the coin factory at 155 Hermann St. along with another pit bull named Luna and attacked a Mint employee as she was walking to work at about 6 a.m., U.S. Mint and San Francisco Animal Care and Control officials said.
The employee fended the dog off with her cane and screamed. A U.S. Mint police officer who was driving by heard her scream and stopped, U.S. Mint spokesman Tom Jurkowsky said.
The dog then attacked a homeless man and a jogger running by. Jurkowsky did not know if the two people were injured

Breed of the Month: Vizsla

The Vizsla is a dog breed originating in Hungary. The Hungarian or Magyar Vizsla are sporting dogs and loyal companions, in addition to being the smallest of the all-round pointer-retriever breeds.
The Vizsla's medium size is one of the breed's most appealing characteristics as a hunter of fowl and upland game, and through the centuries the Vizsla has held a rare position among sporting dogs - that of household companion and family dog.
The Vizsla is a natural hunter endowed with an excellent nose and an outstanding trainability.

History:
The Vizsla was already known in early Hungarian history. The ancestors of the present Vizsla were the trusted and favorite hunting dogs of the Magyar tribes who lived in the Carpathian Basin in the 10th century. Primitive stone etchings over a thousand years old show the Magyar hunter with his falcon and his Vizsla.
Companion dogs of the early warlords and barons, Vizsla blood was preserved pure for centuries by the land-owning aristocracy who guarded them jealously and continued to develop the hunting ability of these "yellow-pointers". Records of letters and writings show the high esteem in which the Vizsla was held.
Vizslas faced and survived several near-extinctions in their history, including being overrun by English Pointers and German Shorthair Pointers in the 1800s and again to near-extinction after World War II. A careful search of Hungary and a poll of Hungarian sportsmen revealed only about a dozen Vizslas of the true type still alive in the country. From that minimum stock, the breed rose to prominence once again. The various "strains" of the Vizsla have become somewhat distinctive as individuals bred stock that suited their hunting style. Outside Hungary, Vizslas are commonly bred in Romania, Austria, Slovakia, and Serbia.

The Vizsla started arriving in the United States at the close of World War II. As interest in and devotion to the breed began to increase, owners formed the Vizsla Club of America in order to gain AKC recognition. Vizsla owners were able to obtain official recognition on November 25, 1960, as the Vizsla became the 115th breed recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Colors and Coats:
The standard coat is a solid golden-rust color in different shadings. Solid dark mahogany red and pale yellow are considered faults and a disqualification. Small areas of white on the fore-chest and on the neck. Some variations in the Vizsla coat color along their back (saddle-type marks) is typical.

Life span:
12-15 years

40-66 pounds

Is it Safer to Wear Pants or Shorts Around Dogs?

Mitzi Robinson was asked to provide her expert opinion on the difference between long vs short pants.
Answer: Yes, it absolutely makes a difference! A dog will bite the first thing he comes in contact with on the body. In most cases, employees will be confronted by submissive dogs and these types of dogs will want to keep all four feet on the ground. They will want to use a frontal grip, which means only the canine and incisor teeth are used for biting. This is important because a submissive dog will usually grab no more than the pant. Wearing long pants helps to prevent the employee from punctures and scraping from frontal bites.
A dominant dog uses a full grip bite. Meaning he will use the front and back parts of his mouth causing a more severe bite. Premolars and molars used in full grip bites will not only break the skin but also can cause broken bones, and serve muscles and nerve damage. If the majority of the dogs employees faced were dominant then wearing pants would be useless. But since most dogs are submissive long pants will help prevent employee bites and injuries.
Have a very safe day!

Postal Worker Attacked By Dog in Portland Neighborhood Speaks
Tabnie Dozier, @WHAS11Tabnie 11:47 p.m. EDT June 23, 2015

It's a route he's taken hundreds of times.
The scars are slowly healing after Bruce, a Portland area mail carrier, was attacked by a pit bull Monday afternoon.

"If it was a child, it would've been pretty worse. Then he grabbed my hand that I had my mace with and bit my hand with the mace as well," he said.

The U.S. Postal Service said Bruce was armed with dog spray during the attack, but the pit bull was too aggressive.

Christy Branch admits it was her pit bull Buddy that attacked Bruce and says she doesn't live at 25th and Duncan Street, she was just visiting family.
"I'm sorry that it happened to Brother Bruce and that's why I made the choice to put my dog down. I'm not hiding my dog anywhere. It's been hell. It was like my baby and it was my choice to put him down, I didn't have too."
