Successful Ways to Help Utility Employees NOT be Part of 4.5 Million Dog Bite Attacks Every Year
Successful Practice Challenge:
For utility workers, a dog's bark is always worse than its bite until that employee is bitten! At that point, a bark becomes the trigger for stress, anxiety, fear, and wondering when that bark will turn into another attack. Even with daily canine scenarios, most employees have no idea of the basics for avoiding dog attacks, basics that include entering the yard, reading a dog's posture, leaving the yard - in fact, most dog attacks occur when an employee leaves the yard. But there are also dogs which attack from a neighbor's yard, and even packs of dogs. Believe it or not, one of the most dangerous situations involves a dog whose owner is present!
Successful Practice Solution:
"There are two key strategies to help avoid dog bites," explains Mitzi Robinson, President, Bulli Ray Occupational Dog Bite Safety, the premier occupational dog bite avoidance company in the United States, "first, educate your workforce and, second, educate customers."
As utility leaders know, the routine delivery of gas and electric services to customers involves employees entering dog owners' yards and houses, and owners are widely different. There are owners who are concerned about their pets and make sure they're protected from confrontations with a stranger, and there are owners who don't care about their dogs, feeling the dog is there to keep everyone out of their yard. These are also owners who have a hard enough time feeding and providing fresh water for their dogs, much less being concerned with protecting an employee.
Hawthorne man badly mauled by neighbor's dogs
A 74-year-old man was severely mauled by two dogs belonging to his neighbor near Hawthorne on Friday morning.

Roy McSweeney, of 259 Old Hawthorne Road in Putnam County, was rushed to Shands at the University of Florida for extensive surgery including an attempt to save one of his arms. The other arm had been completely ripped off by the dogs, said Putnam County Sheriff's Capt. Johnny Greenwood.
"He was in his yard doing yard work when the dogs jumped over the fence and attacked him," Greenwood said, adding that the fence was thin wire. "An investigator said the surgery would take six to eight hours."
Greenwood said McSweeney's right arm was ripped off by the dogs. His left arm was partially removed and his face was injured, Greenwood added.

Man out for jog mauled to death by 2 dogs in Michigan

L.L Brasier, Eric D. Lawrence and Katrease Stafford, Detroit Free Press July 24, 2014

DETROIT - A pair of dogs attacked and mauled to death a man as he jogged down a quiet, dirt road in rural Michigan.
Craig Sytsma, 46, of Livonia died of his injuries Wednesday night at a local hospital, police in Metamora Township said.
"He was jogging, doing what everybody else does out there, running and riding bikes," said Metamora police Officer Sean Leathers, who was one of the first on the scene. Sytsma, a divorced father of three, was unconscious and undergoing CPR when Leathers arrived.
Sytsma worked in nearby Oxford and had apparently decided to go for a jog after leaving work.
The dogs were apparently running free on the road where the attack took place. Neighbors fired shots into the air to try to scare the dogs off the jogger.
Afterward, the dogs retreated to their owner's home.
The dogs are cane corsos, an Italian mastiff-type breed that the American Kennel Club says were property watchdogs that hunted wild boar in their native country.

Breed of the Month:
Beauceron

A very versatile breed, the Beauceron is used to both guard and herd sheep and cattle. It was once very useful against wolves, now long gone from northern France.
The breed served in both world wars as messenger dog, supply transport dog, land mine detection dog, search dog, police dog and rescue dog
History
A French herding breed known for centuries in western Europe, the Beauceron is noted as one of the breeds used to create the Doberman Pinscher.

The regional name is somewhat misleading. The breed was found throughout northern France, rather than just in the Beauce region. Although quite different in appearance, the Beauceron and the long-haired sheep dog, the Briard, stem from similar ancestral stock, sharing the trait of double dewclaws on the hind legs. Both were used to herd sheep and cattle.

An important feature of the Beauceron is the double dewclaw. In order to be shown, a Beauceron must have double dewclaws that form well-separated "thumbs" with nails on each rear leg.

Colors:  Its standard coloring is black and tan or grey, Other colors, such as the once prevalent tawny, grey or grey/black, are now banned by the breed standard. The merle coats should have more black than gray with no white.

Life span: 10-13 years
