Dog Bites FedEx Driver
Darien, CT
By The Darien Times Connecticut on May 5, 2014
While delivering a package to a Stony Brook Road home, a FedEx deliveryman was bit on his leg by a large black dog on Friday, May 12.
Police said the courier approached the front door of the home at around 10:35 a.m. when a Bernese Mountain Dog ran toward him and bit him on his lower left leg. The laceration was treated by Darien-EMS Post 53 and he was taken to Norwalk Hospital.
 Did you know that..
On a typical 500-household route, a meter reader, cable installer, delivery person or postal carrier will encounter 300 dogs, most of which will be aggressive.
Annually, over four million dog bites are serious enough to require medical attention, and the severity of dog bites rises every year.
Dog bites are one of the fastest-growing litigation situations today (over $1 billion in settlements paid each year).
Not training your workers adequately to avoid dog attacks puts your workers in peril and leaves your company vulnerable to million-dollar court judgments.
One hospitalization and lost-time accident will easily pay for the cost of a ODBS training seminar.
Dog Mauls Utility Worker Who Entered Fenced Backyard in Huber Heights, OH

HUBER HEIGHTS -- A woman frantically calls 911, trying to get some help in Huber Heights. She was making the call as her dog mauled a utility worker in her backyard.

CALLER: "Can you please hurry, my dog is attacking this lady in my backyard and I can't help her because I'm nine months pregnant."

That utility worker has some serious injuries, but she is expected to be OK.

She works for a company called USIC. They locate ground utilities for local utility companies. Police say she entered the fenced-in backyard to do her work, but the homeowner didn't know she was out there and let the dog out. When the dog saw the worker, the dog immediately attacked, biting the woman.

Here at Bulli Ray, we take Occupational Dog Bite Safety seriously.

Even though National Dog Bite Prevention Week was last month it reminds us of the dangers employees face every day when working around customers' dogs.
And it's not just about the physical trauma of being bitten, but the dread of encountering or being surprised by attacking dogs, and knowing every day that a dog attack is possible normal part of the job.
Dog bite safety training is important and necessary for the safety and peace of mind of your field employees. Meanwhile, what can you do right now?

Start your employees' work day with a dog bite safety talkHow much time are we talking about?
Probably 4 to 5 minutes to remind everyone of one or two basic attack avoidance methods.
Remind your staff that a dog will bite the first thing it comes to, and not carrying a personal protective device leaves the dog nothing to bite but THEM!

Review your policies and procedures pertaining to the aggressive dogs; and if you don't have those policies, put them together!

Plan on sending management/trainers to one of our Train the Trainer's to learn Dog Bite Safety techniques/policies that are already working for other companies just like yours. Bulli Ray makes this easy to do, and the cost is well offset by the savings you'll realize in reduced emergency room and hospital costs, reduced liability, improved morale, and reduced turnover.

Online Occupational Dog Bite Safety training is fast & easy to use, and has proven very effective.

Breed of the Month:
Cairn Terrier

The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest of the terrier breeds, originating in the Scottish Highlands and recognized as one of Scotland's earliest working dogs. The breed is commonly used for hunting burrowing prey among the cairns (A cairn is a man-made pile or stack of stones.)
Although the breed had existed long before, the name Cairn Terrier was a compromise suggestion after the breed was originally brought to official shows in the United Kingdom in 1909 under the name Short-haired Skye terriers.
Terry, the dog who played Toto in the 1939 screen adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, was a brindle Cairn Terrier
History

The Cairn was initially grouped in the "Skye Terrier" class alongside the Scottish and West Highland White Terriers. In the early 1900s, the three breeds began to be bred separately. The breed was given the name cairn, because the breed's function was to chase quarry from the cairns in the Scottish highlands.

Colors: The Cairn Terrier has a harsh, weather-resistant outer coat that can be "pink," "blue," wheaten, red, sandy, gray or brindled in any of these colors.

Life span: 12-17 years
No Charges To Be Filed in St Johns, MI Postal Worker Dog Bite Case
Letter carrier bitten on owner's property. May 6, 2014

ST. JOHNS,MI - A dog that injured a 40-year veteran postal worker as he was delivering a package to a St. Johns home last month will remain with its owners. No grounds exist for criminal charges, said Chris Smith, Clinton County Animal Control officer.
"The way the law is written, the victim, whether invited or not invited, was on the dog owner's property and the dog was not at large or running loose, so there are no grounds to file a criminal complaint," Smith said.
However, mail will not be delivered to the address, said Sabrina Todd, spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service's Greater Michigan District.

 FAQ
Question:
Would a dog come through a plate glass window?

Answer:
Yes, dogs do not know a glass window is glass.
When the dog hits the glass hard enough it will break. Most dogs are hurt and have even been killed.
If you are approaching a house where the dog is hitting the glass, be careful!
If the window is above you try to avoid walking under that window. There are employees that have been hit by falling glass.
