I have heard you say how important the bedroom is in terms of creating a space where my husband and I can rest and relax. As a result, we have taken all extraneous items out of there that included a chair that didn't fit, a hamper we weren't using, an extra mattress we decided to give away, and a ton of dresser-top clutter.

I have had a small altar in the bedroom which I haven't paid much attention to----probably because it got lost in all the stuff that was around it. What do you think about having an altar in the bedroom?

                                                                                                                        JoAnne

Hi JoAnne,

There are three answers to this question: no, yes, and it depends. Typically an altar is super-charged with energy because a person will put a special crystal, a picture of a spiritual teacher, reminders of a higher power, etc. These hold a lot of intensity and can actually keep people awake. So, then, the answer is that the altar does not belong in the bedroom.

Other people find an altar and all its meanings and symbols to be comforting and protective----and it doesn't seem to be affecting their sleep adversely. Then the answer is "yes."

Another situation is that can occur is that someone does not feel comfortable having an altar in the public areas of their home. They are concerned about the reaction of friends and family and do not want to subject this sacred setting to ridicule or disdain. Although they may prefer NOT to have their altar in their bedroom, there is no other place for it.

In this last scenario, if the altar seems to be disturbing sleep, covering it at night with a beautiful and symbolic scarf or fabric would help to lessen its impact.

So it depends on your scenario, JoAnne. If both you and your husband would appreciate it in your bedroom, my suggestion would be to try it there and see how things work out.

The Chinese calendar, called the Tong Shu, reflects astrological cycles which can indicate on a daily basis whether there is a tendency toward good fortune or the
need for retreat or protection. If you're trying to make a decision about moving forward with a project or making a decision, you would want to do this on an extremely auspicious day or at least one indicated as a good day.
