Carole,

Please explain to me why bathrooms are such a problem in Feng Shui. I hear you and others talk about keeping the door closed and minimizing their presence. It sounds like the best place to have a bathroom is outside the house.
~Brad

Hi Brad,

Bathrooms have definitely gotten a bad rap all these years. But if you remember, when Feng Shui was coming into popularity, bathrooms were indeed outside the house, were often communal, and were, well, unpleasant. Not only did you not want one inside the house, but you didn't want one even NEAR the house.

However times have changed. I have now seen bathrooms that look like mini-spas----they're beautifully decorated, candles, flowers, incense, doors dividing the toilet from the rest of the bathroom. It's hard to argue against their place in the house.

That said, they still harbor a lot of drains (toilet, shower, sinks, Jacuzzi, etc.) which underscores a message about draining more than water----your energy, your money, your relationship, your health. Having them be beautiful does help to offset this drain flow, but precautions should still be taken to keep them minimized in the routine flow of the space. In other words, I still wouldn't leave the door wide open!

The Chinese calendar, called the Tong Shu, reflects astrological cycles which can indicate on a daily basis whether there is a tendency toward good fortune or the
need for retreat or protection. If you're trying to make a decision about moving forward with a project or making a decision, you would want to do this on an extremely auspicious day or at least one indicated as a good day.
