Teen Leadership class of 2016 graduates!

The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the Graduation of the participants in the 15th Annual Teen Leadership Cherokee (TLC) Class. Of the 53 Cherokee County high school sophomores that applied, 19 students graduated from the program. Applicants were asked to submit a formal application and participated in a personal  interview with local business leaders.

Over the past three months the TLC Class attended an Orientation with their parents, an all-day Retreat, and several class sessions which were planned by local business leaders all of whom are graduates of the Chamber's adult Leadership Cherokee program. The classes addressed topics such as community involvement, economic and educational responsibility, personal development and team building.

Students had the opportunity to integrate the skills and information they learned throughout the program into a final class project. Students were asked to create a business concept, individualized business plan and commercial to promote their company or organization. Businesses could provide a product or service and function as either a for profit or non-profit business or organization. The TLC program was made possible this year by Chattahoochee Technical College, Cobb EMC, Delta Community Credit Union, Mauldin Body Shop & Towing, Northside Hospital - Cherokee, Reinhardt University, REST Marketing, LLC, and State Farm Insurance Jey Willis Agency.

The mission of Teen Leadership Cherokee is to develop the knowledge and leadership skills of young people in Cherokee County so they may confidently become our leaders of tomorrow.  The Chamber congratulates all of the students and is proud of their dedication and hard work throughout the program.

 FARM BUREAU AWARDS GRANT
 TO FREE HOME ELEMENTARY
Free Home Elementary was recently awarded a grant from the Georgia Farm Bureau Foundation. Plans for the funds include building a worm composting bed and creating a classroom observation chamber. These additions will aid with current gardening projects around the school and benefit each grade level.

Students will observe how the worms turn yard scraps and lunchroom waste into nutrient soil. They will also learn about the important role worms play in improving the overall soil and how they earned their title of being "decomposers".

 an energizing partnership
Fifth grade students at Boston Elementary enjoyed a presentation on electricity, insulators, conductors, and electrical safety by Cobb EMC. Cobb EMC is a valued Partner In Education at Boston Elementary, and students experience many exciting performances and demonstrations thanks to Cobb EMC.

Cobb EMC presented a mini-grant in the amount of $500 to Boston Elementary. The school will utilize the funds for Study Island, which is a computer program that offers games and assessments for students across the curriculum, including reading, math, science, and social studies. Students enjoy the self-paced program that is individualized for each student's level.

 Learning with Legos
Rotary's 111th Birthday was celebrated at a Canton Rotary Workday at Canton Elementary School STEM Academy on February 23. In less than three hours a trio of Canton Rotarians installed a Lego Wall in the Media Center at the school as the First Leg(o) of the new Makerspace Innovation Lab!

Representing the Rotarian enthusiasm of the entire club, the three Rotarians (pictured above, l-r) Assistant Governor Peter Gleichman, Keith Mahoney, and Club President Jerry Cooper erected the Lego panels in an almost choreographed fashion  in an area of the library where a bookshelf once stood.

Funded by a $5,000 Canton Rotary Club-Rotary District Grant, the Makerspace Lab, which includes a 3D printer, will be a unique work space where students can build creations limited only by the confines of their imaginations.

What made the work even more fun for the Rotarians was seeing the excitement on the faces of students as classes walked by the windows of the Media Center and saw the Lego Wall going up!

Above a class pauses briefly in the hallway to check on the progress being made on the Media Center Lego Wall.
