H&A Caring Fund Grant Winner Announced!
Hawley & Associates, in partnership with the NCFA (National Council for Adoption) have come together once again to form the 2014 H&A Caring Fund Grant. The Grant was open to all 2014 NCFA National Adoption Conference attendees. This year's grant is in the amount of $5000.00

All grant applications were carefully reviewed by the H&A Caring Fund Grant Committee and the recipient selected for this years grant is Children's Home Society of W. Virginia!

In 2006, Children's Home Society celebrated 110 years of service to children and families in West Virginia focusing on three distinct services:

Adoption
Emergency Shelter Care
Specialized Care and Treatment for Emotionally Disturbed Children

Last year, Children's Home Society helped more than 6,800 children and their families throughout the state. Board members, volunteers and staff of the organization continue to celebrate its century-old tradition of service to West Virginia 's children and families and to rededicate themselves to the Society's mission to promote the well being of children.

The grant monies will be used to purchase furnishings and equipment for a new emergency children's shelter/recreation room.  Items to be purchased will include library books, activity tables, educational supplies and a common use computer.

Congratulations, Children's Home Society of W. Virginia and thank you for the wonderful work that you do!

Coverage Corner
Directors & Officers Liability

Directors & Officers Liability coverage (often called D&O) is for defense costs & damages arising out of wrongful act allegations and lawsuits brought against an organization's board of directors and/or officers. Non-profits may not realize that their board members could be held personally liable for the actions of the organization.

Lawsuits can be brought in response to actions and decisions made by a nonprofit Board of Directors or Trustees/and or Officers. Common areas of dispute revolve around discrimination, sexual harassment, wrongful termination, negligence, failure to provide services, intellectual property rights infringement, mismanagement of assets, and misrepresentation of the financial status of the organization, just to name a few.

Some of these claims can be minimized by having good risk management practices & procedures in place, but sometimes insurance is needed if a suit is actually filed.

Losses arising out of lawsuits alleging such things as discrimination or wrongful termination are often excluded from an organization's General Liability policy.
